Spanish conquistadors attempted to conquer the New World nearly a century before the English colonists established a permanent settlement at Jamestown. This book examines the unsuccessful elements of Spain's attempt at expanding its empire in the Americas, focusing particularly on the misadventures of three conquistadors. Part One tells the story of Cabeza de Vaca who, along with three other survivors of the ill-fated Panfilo de Narvaez expedition to Florida, spent nearly eight years among the various tribes that wandered across Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico before finding his way back to civilization. Their tales of lands rich with earthly delights served as inspiration for two epic but failed expeditions that make up the second and third parts of the book: Francisco de Coronado's quest to find the golden cities of Cibola and Hernando de Soto's efforts to find the rich kingdoms of Florida.

Good book on fascinating subject
By William Marut
This book focuses on three conquistadors who ventured north, into what would later become the United States. It is an engaging, well-written, interesting book. I gave it four stars instead of five for three reasons. 1. Lack of maps. I realize that no one is certain about the exact routes of these explorers, but even "fuzzy" maps would have been better than none. This is the biggest shortcoming of the book, and it is a major one at that. 2. Lack of a "cast of characters" page. There are so many characters in this book that the reader really does need some sort of an aid to keep everyone straight. 3. It's not the author's fault, and it's not the book's fault, but after a while, a predictable pattern starts to develop: Spaniards attack Indians, Indians lose, Spaniards loot, Spaniards move on. The pattern repeats ad nauseum, to the point where it becomes repetitious and boring. This was especially true of the Coronado and de Soto expeditions; de Vaca's wanderings were a little more diverse. All in all, though, if you are interested in this part of history, I recommend the book.
