This reminds teachers about developmental appropriateness and pacing variations based on learner needs. Clearly the gradual release of responsibility model of guided instruction is promoted and reinforced throughout the text.

About the Author
Francine Johnston is Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she teaches reading, language arts, and children’s literature. A former first-grade teacher and reading specialist.
Marcia Invernizzi is Director of the McGuffey Reading Center at the University of Virginia exploring developmental universals in non-English orthographies. A former English and reading teacher, Marcia works with children experiencing difficulties learning to read and write in intervention programs such as Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative and Book Buddies
Donald Bear is director of the E. L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy where he and preservice, Master’s and doctoral students teach and assess children who struggle to learn to read and write. Donald is a professor in the Department of Educational Specialties in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. Donald has been a classroom teacher and he researches and writes about literacy development and instruction. He is an author of numerous articles, book chapters, and books, including Words Their Way ®, Words Their Way ® with English Learners, and Vocabulary Their Way.

Solid information
By Two of four hops
This program, Words Their Way, has been a tremendous help in my classroom. After giving the spelling test to determine what kind of spellers the students are (alphabetic, within word or derivational), I was able to break down my lessons and develop better spelling habits for my students. The book is completely thorough in that it gives the actual lesson as well as RTI-based interventions for the kids who still don't get it or who need more of a challenge. The books are scaffolded on each other, yet each lesson is usable in and of itself. My students are learning how to spell with mehtods that make sense, I'm seeing great results and there are no more weekly spelling lists. The words are real-life, ones that are used naturally in their writing. Highly recommended, as long as you know what kind of speller you're working with (determined by the information spelling test).

Awesome teachers aid,

Ever been told to find a new way to teach spelling, and been given absolutely no instruction about it at all? Yeah, I teach fourth grade GT language arts. That scenario fell to me the day before school started this year. After searching around a good bit, I wanted to get into more intermediate rules and practical applications that would help writers on the state mandated writing test. Words Their Way was a good start, but I had no time to prep a lot of materials or read a lot of research that suggested possibilities. I knew how kids spelled constructively, but how to make the leap? Its not intuitive when you are the middle of high stakes teaching. Spending $[...] on this book brought me peace of mind and a lesson plan come Monday morning.
