About the Author
For the past two decades, Cecie Starr has been known as one of the best-selling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect. Instead of building houses, she now builds, with care and attention to detail, incredible texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Christine Evers has been creating multimedia and Web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. She earned her B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook. After working as a research assistant studying the developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied evolutionary biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

Lisa Starr earned her B.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of California at San Diego Revelle College in 1982. Over the next five years, she became expert in molecular and cell biology as she helped build a veterinary virology research program at the startup biotech firm Syntro (which was later spun off into Protein Polymer Technologies). During this time, Lisa invented the cDNA cloning kit and the mRNA isolation kit that launched Invitrogen (now part of Life Technologies). She left Syntro to launch a molecular biology division for a veterinary vaccine company (Synbiotics, later acquired by Pfizer Animal Health), and then spent seven years at The Scripps Research Institute investigating integrin isoform expression in development and cancer metastasis and training postdoctoral candidates. She was recruited to start up the biotech firm Ixsys/Applied Molecular Evolution (later acquired by Lilly) and to establish proof-of-concept for combinatorial library construction as well as antibody randomization/humanization at the fledgling firm. Prior to joining the Starr franchise, she was recruited to start up Desmos, another biotech firm, that was later spun off into Cythera/Novocell/ViaCyte. Since 1997, Lisa has been responsible for the incredible art in the Starr biology textbooks, and began authoring the books in 2004.

would recommend to anyone in biology 101

Came at a very reasonable price in comparison to what my school store was asking for, and with the renting option I saved even more. Though my class in particular never used it in class, it came very much in handy when I wanted to study for a test. After every chapter there's a 14-16 question quiz with answers in the index. Very helpful, would recommend to anyone in biology 101.

Humanity from a guy who writes about CPUs?

Very enjoyable entertainment for a night.

I am a huge fan of the PC enthusiast web-site One of their staff writers authored this book which I found out about while browsing CPU and graphics card reviews.

I didn't really have time to read a novella, but the site's creator recommended the work so highly I plunged in anyway. The characters were well fleshed out, and had more depth than you might expect from a short work. In the the book I experienced triumph over adversity, a will to live and fundamental humanity. There are action, adventure, bad motives, good motives, greed, and glimmers of hope which punctuate the narrative. Some rather fundamental questions are also posed: Is DNA enough to be human? Can a "person" not have human rights? What does it mean to reverse engineer a person, do you own it/him? The book could not answer those questions, but it does leave you with them to ponder on your own.

Poor endings can ruin an otherwise excellent book. The ending was well done, in my opinion. I actually expected some more drama or twist at the end, but you can chalk that up to me being too tricky for my own good. Thought-provoking entertainment, is there anything better?

Formulaic, but this author needs time to mature and a strong editor

Kowalski is a well-liked reviewer on a computer tech website, and he has a lot of good will going into publishing this, his first novel. The temptation is to give the novel a higher review than it deserves (and I think the 4.5 average review reflects that) in an effort to be supportive. And I'd like to do that too, but it just doesn't deserve it, as it's not creative enough. How:

1) Characters: there's nothing wrong with the characters, but there's also nothing interesting or original about them. This isn't unusual for quick-and-easy SF novels, but that doesn't change it. I didn't find the characters to be memorable at all, just actors in the plot.

2) This is one of those "Earth in the future when a few huge, powerful organizations (or whatever ilk, it never matters) control things in an evil way." Not badly executed, but nothing original.

3) The hero, nothing about whom ever makes him seem other than 'everyman', is thrust into new and dangerous situations and yet copes almost as well as James Bond. Again, we've seen it before.

4) This to me is the most distracting thing, and it's what I find all of the time in self-published novels now that one can do electronic publishing on Amazon for free: There are just too many cliched phrases, usually made so by cliched adjectives and verbs. For instance, the SUV at the beginning of this novel "barrels" through an intersection. Of course it does, but it was too easy and pat a way to describe it. A few of these doesn't hurt, but when you start counting them, it hurts. It's a bit like someone describing someone as a "hapless victim" (though this isn't an example from this novel). Why "hapless"? And have you ever seen the word hapless used in any other way? A real editor would have have made Cyril justify some of these or remove it.

I expect this review to be heavily down-voted, because it's going to be seen as an attack on the author or unsupportive, especially as it's his first novel and was free. Perhaps if I thought that this was the best he could do I'd just omit the review entirely, as I get the impression from what he's written that he's a nice guy and I wish him well, and I suspect that if he writes more novels, they will get better. But I don't think it helps him to pretend that this is a 4 or 5 start SF novel.

A very nice read..Highly recommended

Well what drew my attention to this novella was the preview read. It quickly attracted my attention and i felt i had to know the outcome. Also i like to read new authors and test the waters of their minds. This author quickly pulled me into the story and i was thoroughly entertained. I will be looking for more from this writer in the future.

Make your own holograms in your own basement darkroom

The authors explain, with numerous photos, how to set up a 4'x4'x1' sandbox table, full of 1600 pounds of sand, all "floating" on partially inflated inner tubes for making your own holograms. That way, when the garbage truck goes past the house, no vibrations will disrupt the inertial stability of your optics lab. And you can put the lenses and mirrors on long sticks and just push them into the sandbox! This is a real how-to manual, with numerous practical tips for setting up lasers, mirrors, shutters, exposure meters, timers, viewing objects, and the hologram-capturing film that will become your own holograms, if you follow the steps and invest about $1000.
Where to buy lasers? How does it all work? How do I set up the tabletop? This is a lab manual that doesn't subject us to much optics math, but rather inspires us to marvel, and guides us with easy to follow sketches to find personal and expansive philosophical answers, without really telling us what we'! ! ll find when we have so followed. There is a even section on "the holographic brain", "holocosmology" and other artistic and philosophic excursions.
Wonderful photos show Dr. Dennis Gabor who conceived of a hologram in 1948, while working on the electron microscope, 13 years before the laser was invented. One shows him accepting the Nobel Prize. He looks a little like Salvador Dali.
This book could perhaps be the basis for a "hologram merit badge" for, say, a group of kids from ages 9-13, let by an adult who needs an excuse to actually set this all up. Laser safety is explained, too.
"These are the early days of holography," the author muses in the preface, "we might compare ourselves to photographers working prior to 1860....We welcome you, as a fellow pioneer, to join in the excitement of being involved in it from the beginning."
And you won't need much more than this book to delve deeply into this wizardry, either. W! ! ell, ok, the sand.

So easy a 15 year old can use it

I bought this book when I was 14 years old, built the vibration isolation sandbox table, put together PVC mounts for basic optics and mirrors I bought and literally made reflection holograms in the bedroom of my parents house using this book, developing plates in the bathroom sink with all windows blocked out. I futher went on to make more advanced multi-beam, transmission holograms using advanced equipment. Not sure how up to date the sources for equipment and materials are, for that was 25 years ago. But everything you need to know to get started in holography is contained in this book and its conveys the information in a simple, straight forward manner that almost anybody can use. The authors did a terrific job. Highly recommended.

Fair, but occasionally impractical

The idea of using a sand table for home holography keeps appearing over and over. As any optician knows, sand and grit are what are used to grind glasses, and they're also what cause people to buy new ones.
A sand-based optical bench sounds like a great (read "cheap") idea, but it's simply impossible to get rid of the floating grit. Even if it's later sealed up, pouring the sand gets grit all over. It only takes one tiny speck to throw Newton's rings all over a setup. OK, that's relatively harmless (unsightly, but harmless), but it could equally well get into and ruin a spatial filter.
I found the theory section of this book hard to follow, despite several degrees in engineering.
This is by no means a bad book. It has much useful information. Go to the library and borrow this one, then make use of the good parts. But buy Iovine's excellent book "Homemade Holograms" instead.

Overtime is worth your time! Another WIN for Toni Aleo's Assassin's Series

Overtime by Toni Aleo is an emotional story about overcoming addiction and learning to allow yourself to be loved.

Jordie blew it and he knows it. He pushed Kacey away and made sure she stayed away, by basically ignoring her while he drank and screwed himself into a not so pretty place. The only thing left in his life worth living is hockey and now because of his addiction he may also lose hockey. He fully commits to cleaning up his act and when the haze clears the one person he wants to share it with is the one he pushed away..

Kacey had her heart ripped to shreds by Jordie and she will not fall into that trap again, she is moving on... well trying to. Everyone keeps saying Jordie has changed.. and he seems different.. and she finds him very hard to stay away from.. especially when his eyes only seem to be for her..

First off I am head over heels in love with Toni Aleo's Assassins series. I have yet to finish a book in this series that didn't give me butterflies.. and a few tears. Her books reach into your soul and pull. I love when an author can make you feel what her characters are feeling and she never disappoints. Overtime was a lot more emotional than I expected, it quickly sucked me and I found myself cheering for Jordie as he made progress overcoming his addiction and at times wanting to smack Kacey on the back and say open your eyes girl, this boy has changed. These two burn up the sheets and I have to say prior to reading this book, I wasn't a fan of the beard, but I Jordie definitely makes me rethink my position.

If you want a book that will suck you in and stay with you long after the last page pick up Overtime by Toni Aleo.. in fact pick up the entire Assassins series.. you can thank me later!

4.5 "Definitely Worth It" Stars!

This review is coming from the one who hated the novella proceeding this book "Waiting To Forget (Jordie's Tale)" and rated accordingly. Having read that, I was extremely nervous about reading this one. But seeing as how I'd pre-ordered (since that's what I do with Toni Aleo), I started reading...accepting that maybe this was one hot hockey man I wasn't going to be too keen on.
Stupid, stupid mistake!
What I ended up getting was one he!l of a redeemable hero!! :) If ever you want to read about a hero who screws up monumentally by breaking - no; SHATTERING - the heart of the woman he loves and continually screws up, but actually spends the majority of the book proving to her that he has changed and SHOWING her just how much he has and how he much he loves her, then this is definitely the book for you.
Jordie's heartwrenching struggles as he battles to overcome his unhealthy way of dealing with his demons, had me in tears and cheering him on. He killed it in this book...and don't I feel like a moron for doubting him! Once he finally got himself together and made the decision of what (or rather, who) he wanted, he went after it and refused to give up. I loved how even when Kacey was fighting him, he never gave up on her; he kept fighting for her, for them, and I freaking loved it!
It was also refreshing to read of a heroine who, even though she had forgiven him, struggled with moving on which I found more realistic than suddenly forgetting everything that had ever happened in the past. I loved how she never gave in easily, but wasn't too stubborn about it. Yes, Kacey had some over the top reactions and her crazy was off the charts in some parts, but Jordie was there, time and time again, reminding her that he was in this for life.
This made me want to re-read the Assassin series while I anxiously wait for the next. I'm hanging out for Benji's story though....hope that's coming sooner rather than later :)

Oh Jordie...

Toni Aleo has done it again. Love the Assassins. My heart went out to Jordie. All he wanted was to be loved by the one person that didn't care about him. Before he could love Kacey he needed to be able to find himself and know that he is good enough to love and be loved. Kacey is perfect for Jordie because she is strong and doesn't back down and gives as good as Jordie gives. Very proud of Jordie and him being strong enough to fight his addiction to alcoholism and also being strong to stand up to the one person that failed him in showering him in love and knowing that it's ok to not have that person in his life because they will always be the dark to Jordie's light.

Other Lovemaking Opportunities

This book was written in the 70's and is an interesting viewpoint of sex and lovemaking. It has it own lexicon so the reader may or may not enjoy figuring out what the author is talking about. The book doesn't need to be read cover to cover and I enjoyed jumping around reading the parts that were of the most interest to me.

test of human existence is love

This is a collection of talks and essays by Adi Da on human emotions, love and "sexuality" taken in a broad sense. There is a great deal of content here but there are at least two aspects to the consideration that really spoke to me:

The first is about our open and whole body participation in the energetic and full dimension of life, which is a tangible expression of divine consciousness. Usually we habituate to a very small spectrum of feeling and its associated phenomena (thoughts, body sense, and limited emotions) as opposed to living the full spectrum of our possibilities as human beings.

"When the individual is frustrated, it is Life in him that is suppressed. The Force of Life is naturally expansive, moving, blissful, and undefined. But frustration or suppression of the feeling being, the whole body, tends to create an equal and opposite reaction, in the form of reactive contractions of attention(into forms of thought) and emotions (into reactive forms, such as fear, sorrow, guild, anger, and self-doubt) and body ( into genital tension and organ and muscle tensions or dis-eases all over the body)...Instead, ecstasy is realized in Divine Communion moment to moment, and the reactivity of the body mind is thereby undermined and made penetrable by the Force of Life. Thus, the devote is not obliged to solve the problems created by the chronic reactivity, but he penetrates reactivity with living force, and he lives a happy life of love and service and constant Fullness in God (100-101, Love of the two Armed Form)"

The other aspect has more to do with understating our ritual reactions to how we relate with others in a form of self bondage and other binding activity. Because we feel vulnerable to others we always protect the heart and interpret unavoidable hurts as reasons for punishment (directed at the other and ourselves) or withdrawal. This is one of the primal expression of our self contraction (self centered activity), and thus one of the primarily means to understand and transcend that activity. This quote is from another book, but it sums up the point well:

"The Eogic Ritual Calls every individual To Defend himself or herself Against The Wounds of Love and the Wounding Signs of Un-Love (or eogic self Contraction) In the daily world...The necessary Prerequisites for such Relinquishment [giving up this ritual, my insertion] Are Vulnerability (or The Ability To Feel The Wounds of Love Without Retaliation), Sensitivity To the other in Love (or The Ability To Sympathetically Observe, Understand, Forgive, Love, and Not Punish or Dissociate From the other in Love), and Love Itself (or The Ability To Love, To Know You Are Loved, To Receive Love, and To Know That Both You and the other, Regardless of Any Appearance To The Contrary, Are Vulnerable and In need Of Love) (368-369, Dawn Horse Testament, 1st ed.)"

Bought this book for a Public Speaking class

Bought it for a public speaking class at USA which I believe the author is a teacher at. Read the first chapter as assigned and was disappointed with the quality of the text. There were abundant typos, poor editing, and in general a bunch of fluff.

Since public speaking is a required course for CAS majors I talked with a lot of my friends about it and they had bad things to say about it too.
The book was a frequent topic of rants among students.

From the first chapter (I'm paraphrasing):

"Why is it important to have ethics? Because ethics is essential to being an effective public speaker."

And then two seconds later they go on an rant about Hilter [sic].

I know this is a public speaking book but
1) Public speaking isn't the reason we should be ethical 2) It's *Hitler,* not "Hilter." 3) Hitler wasn't ethical at all but he was an enormously effective public speaker...

After that I pretty much stopped reading. Still got an A.

So don't waste your money. Everything I needed for the course was in the free, online portion of the class.
