About the Author
Barbara Kiefer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University where she teaches courses in Reading and Children’s Literature. Originally trained in art education, she taught grades 1-5 in several regions of the U.S. and in overseas schools. She has served as chair of the Elementary Section Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English and as a member of the NCTE Executive Board and was a member of the 1988 Caldecott Award Committee of the American Library Association. She has also served as chair of the NCTE/CLA notable Trade Books in the Language Arts committee and the Children’s Book Council/International Reading association Joint Committee. She has published articles and book chapters about reading and children’s literature. She is the author of THE POTENTIAL OF PICTUREBOOKS: From Visual Literacy to Aesthetic Understanding, the co-author of AN INTEGRATED LANGUAGE PERSEPCTIVE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL with Christine Pappas and Linda Levstik and the sixth and seventh editions of Huck et al.: CHILDREN’S LITERATURE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

Awesome resource for studying librarians!

This book is a must buy for reading teachers, librarians, or anyone else interested in a very well written (but textbook reading) resource for children's literature. It has a CD to go along with the textbook and the layout of the book is easy to follow. There are countless referrals to childrens' books to read at various reading levels.

Q&A with Authors by Preethi Venugopala-Author of WITHOUT YOU Preethi: Describe the differences in your styles of writing? I would like if you analyze each other's style.JAZZ: Zeenat has a more serious approach. She puts in so many details that I feel I should too in my stories. Her characters are more nuanced, her stories have many layers and there's a nice balance between her plot and characters. Also, intentionally or unintentionally, her work is rich with social content.ZEENAT: That sounds really wonderful, thank you Jazz. I actually always thought of Jazz as being a writer with a purpose. All her books so far have been about latent social issues. Class distinction, betrayal and forgiveness, and now Sunshine Girl in Twice Upon a Time is about materialism versus idealism. Jazz's heroines are very modern, strong and independent women. Her heroes are practical and pragmatic. I'm a huge fan because she writes about everyday romance without frills and rainbows. That's a difficult thing to do.Preethi: Why did you choose to compile two novellas in one book? What makes Twice upon a Time special?JAZZ: We'd been chatting and Zeenat mooted the idea. I thought it was great. We both write furiously and love the whole process of writing and developing our stories and discussing each other's work. This seemed like a natural progression and was born of those interactions. We decided individually which of our stories to put out there. Quite by coincidence, it turned out that both novellas are about orphans, but that's not why we put them together in one book.Twice upon a Time is special because it's a labor of love! Both the stories are kinda cute if you ask me.ZEENAT: They most certainly are! Jazz and I are both novices at self-publishing. This is our version of holding hands and jumping into unknown waters. Also, we wanted to make a statement for Words without Border. We are friends, and hope one day our countries will be too. Our readers don't choose us for our nationalities but our stories. Thank you, all!Preethi: What kind of a writer are you? Do you plot the entire novel/story or make it up as you write? JAZZ: I write around a theme and build the story around a central idea. Everything else comes after - the plot, the character, the setting.... Only a Dream was about betrayal, Against all Odds was about class divide. In Twice upon a Time Aanya is an orphan. So then I asked myself: how did she get orphaned, how does she earn a living, where does she live, why and where does she meet Gaurav, what brings him back to her time and again. Her character and his, too, developed from the dialogue that I had no control over. The conversation between them took a life of its own.ZEENAT: It's always characters with me. Sometimes it begins with a conversation between two characters and I just start writing as they talk and then one thing leads to another. Sometimes it's one character, and her/his thoughts and feelings that just come pouring out, like with Fardeen, in She Loves Me He Loves Me Not. It was his anger and feelings of bitterness after his accident that got me started on that story. With Yours Truly, in Twice Upon a Time, it was Zoya and Sheru's confused feelings for each other.Jazz & Zeenat: We would like to thank all of our wonderful readers, fans,bloggers, supporters and fellow writers for the journey so far. Fresh, fun and family

This book has two novellas filled with love, reminding us that love is found in the most unexpected places. The stories highlight the importance of communication in all relationships and how at times we fail to recognize the most obvious facts as they look us in the face.

Sunshine Girl is the first story in the book and the novella is just like the name – fresh and bright. I loved the sense of humor of Aanya in spite of her grim situation and her spunk.

Even though Gaurav is a hard nosed business man when he meets her, she mellows him down with her simplicity and straight forward words. Gaurav was a genuine, hardworking guy and so enamored with her; it was a delight to read about his adventures with her. The story is quite straight forward but the way Jazz has managed to make it into a story about a family and not just a boy and girl made it fun a read. The characters, their back story and the vivid discussions all added a lot of depth to a novella.

The secondary characters are well written though I found the younger sister a bit too sweet! Aanya and Gaurav do complement each other and Sunshine Girl was a light, fun read.

Yours Truly is a novella by Zeenat Mahal and each time I read her I get charmed by her words yet again. Whether it is a short story or a novel she spins so much within each page. Her writing has depth and emotion and this story is no exception.

Zoya and Sheru, have been together since childhood yet when circumstances bring them closer on a new journey they are unable to express themselves. Zeenat’s books have always explored the dark side of our lives as love tries to make its presence felt. I loved this book for its honesty and depth in accepting the culture and traditions of Pathans, yet using the positives from it. She has managed to soften up the rough-edged father and bring the pain and wanting of love within the heart of the frivolous Sheru through her words. She expressed the hesitation of the acceptance of love and desire, the conflict both Zoya and Sheru feel and how their family helps them bring it all together.

The humor, the uncertainty and the amazing feeling of love are all expressed for us to read and savor. Both these stories are a celebration of love and family. The importance and support of family shine through the stories and makes them fast and fun reads. I turned the pages nonstop and so will you!

Double flavour in romance

Twice Upon A Time is a double delight for romance lovers with two romantic flavours. Both the stories have strong 20 something orphan girls, who know what they want.

‘Sunshine Girl’ by Jazz Singh is an uplifting story about Anaya, an orphan, who owns a small piece of land, which Guarav, the handsome businessman, wants to acquire to build a mall. He is bowled over by Anaya’s innocent and generous nature when he goes to negotiate the deal, and the rest is history.

The novella is poignant and sweet and makes one emotional at times. The characters of Rakhi Anaya’s friend and Gaurav’s family complement the story. Short and sweet romance, for a breezy read.

‘Yours Truly’ by Zeenat Mahal is about first love and recognizing that first love. The setting given to the story invokes wonder at integration of traditional and modern culture. And I loved to know more about Pathans and their honor.

Innocent Zoya is a sheltered girl, who is home tutored and lives with her adoptive parents and their son, Sheheryar. She is always very affectionate towards him and helps him is all his escapades. The conflict arises when he realizes that he is in love with her.

Fairly interesting

The book is about building a beautiful mind to enhance ones' appeal (regardless of IQ, knowledge, or looks).

First 7 chapters deals pretty much with holding a decent conversation. Much of this sounds like common sense, but sometimes 'not so common' to some people. When holding a conversation, agreeing to everything is no good, as the other party might as well be talking to himself. Disagreeing everything is bad as it shows a mind that wants to demonstrate superiority to others (thus is ugly). There are many levels in between total agreement and disagreement. You can agree on certain points and disagree on certain points (agree to disagree). The key is to find out what you agree and disagree based on mutual understand of each others' values, point of view, personal experience, and extrapolation of what happens in the future. Once you understand the other party's 'logic bubble', you would be able to hold a better conversation without misunderstandings and negative emotions. To make the conversation interesting, you should also supplement , speculate, provide what-ifs, be open to alternatives, and explore points of interest. Edward explores the way you can do all these.

Chapter 8 addressed the concept of "6 Thinking Hats" or Parallel thinking (Edward has a whole book on this btw). In a Court of Law, a prosecutor will not mention points which will help a defence case, and vice versa for the defence attorney. Our usual thinking is based on using arguments as a method, as put forward by the Greeks: Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. In an argument, each party is usually looking from his own side. Edward gives an alternative method called Parallel thinking where everyone explores the same side, and goes around to all sides until a complete view is understood. This is covered in more details in another book.

The book is easy to understand and digest, and filled with interesting examples of cases where we should look at both sides to understand the whole picture. I also liked the way that some concepts are indexed (see also page so-and-so) which makes it easy to refer. The book has been an interesting read for me.

A fascinating, useful model of how our minds work.

Mechanism of Mind is one of my most treasured books. It gave me very practical insights into how humans process information. The book is easy enough to understand, and doesn't require any previous knowledge of psychology. It's a fairly serious, engrossing read, though, even with de Bono's nice little explanatory diagrams and simple examples. (I've read six of de Bono's books, and this was the most demanding, and the one I'd only recommend to my most intellectual friends).

It compares the brain to an array of a thousand lightbulbs. All the bulbs in the array have a simple device that makes them responsive to light (from an image projected onto the array. Each bulb also has a simple device that makes them "tire" (grow dim) without stimulus).

It's fascinating how the array behaves. De Bono explains how it "processes" patterns, easily mimicing brain functions such as attention and diversion, memory and forgetting, pattern recognition (generalization), creativity and insight.

This book certainly changed my life. I understand much more confidently how my mind works, and the minds of others.

Fascinating mechanism.

This is one of the best books I have read. It does not describe the mind in neurochemical or psychological terms, but hits the spot by providing a simple model of how the mind works. From that model, De Bono provides insight on how memory, learning, attention, 'pig-headedness' and insight can occur. He shows how the brain stores information and experience efficiently, but also shows how those storage units can become rules unto themselves, thereby inhibiting further clear thinking. He then describes lateral thinking, as a means of disrupting the learnt rigid patterns that can make people blind to the simplest of ideas. It is curious that this work is not more extensively discussed in texts on psychology. Those texts often describe research on how certain neurons in the brain become selected through use, but do not take the simple step back to this original work by De Bono. Another interesting interpretation of the De Bono work is provided in Cookson's book 'Our wild niche', where he coins the word mindrules (similar to De Bono's d-lines). Mindrules are experience learnt instincts, and have wider connotations for human ecology and adjustment to various niches, both natural and artificial. I recommend you buy the Mechanism of Mind. Very nice book

This National Geographic book we bought in a local bookstore and it is amazing!! Despite the fact I am an adult I love reading children books with my kids. This one is so colorful my kids adore it!

Nice!

I got this for my 10-year-old daughter who is interested in all animals. Living right in the middle of the country, we especially like to learn about sea creatures because our chances of actually seeing any are slim. This is a really great little book with some really neat pictures. Although I disagree with some of the politics National Geographic seems to sneak into their publications from time to time, this one was pretty neutral. My daughter has read it over and over and loves to show me the pictures and read to me interesting facts about all the fishies.

What's in the Blue stuff called Water?

I purchased this book for my son who is diagnosed with Autism and aspire to become an Ecologist in the area of Marine Biologist. This book has very large and bright pictures and colors. It is written for young people and only has a few pages. Although I son like the book, even with the text bubbles and large print, he wished that it were more information to review. I really liked the pictures and enjoyed the information included. He thought it was a nice refresher. They were like small posters for him as was the NG Kids Wild Animal Atlas. He wants me to try and find the adult versions of these books. I am still looking.
