About the Author
Keith Ellis has worked in the power transformer industry since 1971. During his 40 year career in the industry, he has gained a unique perspective concerning every aspect of Bushings for Power Transformers. In the early days, he selected bushings for power transformer quotations, then, while in field sales, he supervised the installation of bushings in many new power transformers. Beginning in 1986 he focused his efforts specifically on power transformer components, becoming knowledgeable about every phase of bushing development, design and application. In 1992 he was challenged to develop a line of I.E.E.E./A.N.S.I. standard bushings for the US market. In 1995 he developed the concept for high current, low voltage, draw lead bushings. These new bushing designs transformed the bushing industry; bring a new level of safety, lower costs and faster replacement of bushings to the Utility industry. Another development Keith has achieved was the introduction of non-porcelain insulators for oil filled bushings. This introduction brought a new level of safety to the electric substation by reducing collateral damage when there is a major power transformer failure. Keith has also gained experience over the years investigating power transformer failures where the bushing was the suspect. This has gained him the reputation as the go to person when there is a failure of a power transformer, especially if the bushing is suspected. In 2010 Keith decided to share his years of bushing and power transformer experience by writing this book with the objective of providing the Utility Engineers and Technicians with a comprehensive handbook on Bushings for Power Transformers.

Useful reference
By Ryan M.
good reference for transformer bushings. I found other books are to high level on the subject. The book isn't a long or hard read and it does discuss in detail some of the issues with bushing and effectively details replacement considerations. I would recommend this book to other power engineers looking to improve their knowledge on the subject.

Great background on bushings
By BrianK
I agree with the author. There is very little discussion out there for bushings and it is a very important subject. This book presents a lot of detailed information such as the history of bushings and their applications as well covering all of the critical parameters in the selection of various bushings.

An Unremembered Grave, by Abigail Padgett

Danni Telfer, abandoned as a toddler, has no idea what the fading tattoo of a white rose on her left shoulder means. Not does she want to remember the peculiar perceptions that disturbed her childhood. A talented historian, Danni’s focus is on the Louisiana research project she hopes will land her a job that doesn’t involve teaching bored college freshmen. But she’s walking into a confluence of events that will change her life forever. His story preserved only in a threadbare quilt fashioned by a slave during the Civil War, the Vampire Grimaud has slept for a century and a half beneath the soil of a Louisiana plantation called Angola. The place is now a prison hiding over six thousand men in sweltering isolation. One of these, Antoine Dupre, is innocent of the decade-old murder for which he is imprisoned. Yet now he must kill or be killed, unless, impossibly, he can prove his innocence. When a prisoner crew back hoeing the warden’s latest project, a golf course, unearths the vampire’s grave, Stéphane Grimaud wakes to a future beyond his imagination. Without help he will be vulnerable. How fortunate that an adept, a mortal gifted with the ability to see beings who exist in shadows, is nearby. Yet how strange that she fears him! These three – historian, prisoner and vampire – have only a moment in time in which to alter a future already written. And the cost to each will be immeasurable.

About the Author
Abigail Padgett grew up in Vincennes, IN, and holds degrees from Indiana University, the University of Missouri and Washington University, St. Louis. She has taught high school English and college courses in Sociology and Creative Writing in San Diego and Boston, directed an ACLU chapter in Houston and worked as an advocate for the mentally ill, plus enduring some truly weird temp jobs. Abbie is the author of nine highly acclaimed mystery novels that have been translated into five languages, one novel among which, CHILD OF SILENCE, was made into a movie in France. (Which must have been challenging, since the novel's action takes place in the California desert and features Native American Paiute people.) Her eighth mystery, BONE BLIND, is set in the Boston suburb of Newton, where two horror novelists and a detective just months short of retirement investigate a decades-old unsolved murder the spin from which proves even more deadly than the original crime. Writing about writers writing horror was so much fun that her next novel, The Paper Doll Museum, crossed the genre divide with a bit of the supernatural while still involving a mystery. Her latest, An Unremembered Grave, goes a step further into analysis of the supernatural. A recently disinterred vampire and a disaffected history professor who doesn’t know why she sees things nobody else does, combine skills in an attempt to solve a murder. The life of an innocent prisoner in Louisiana’s infamous penitentiary, Angola, hangs in the balance. San Diego is home, although Abbie spends much time on the East Coast and in France. She is a dog person happiest in the company of dachshunds, a sort-of vegetarian with heartland food preferences, and a lifelong fan of Poe, Algernon Blackwood and the Graveyard Poets.

A Vampire Novel for Grownups
By Sheryl T.
I’ve long been a fan of Abigail Padgett’s writing, so I was delighted a while back when she came out with a couple of new books, a stand-alone mystery, “Bone Blind,” and a wonderfully quirky contemporary fantasy called “The Paper Doll Museum,” both of which I loved. Her newest book, “An Unremembered Grave,” is also in the fantasy genre, a deliciously moody vampire novel set against the backdrop of Angola Prison.

The Louisiana location is as much a character in the book as the three individuals, a historian, a prison inmate, and a vampire, whose stories intersect in “An Unremembered Grave.” You can feel the heat, the humidity, and the oppressive weight of history in this isolated corner of the deep South, where a former sugar plantation is now a maximum security prison for six thousand men.

Staying in nearby St. Francisville, where she is doing research, historian Danni Telfer finds herself drawn to two very different men, Antoine Dupre, who is serving a life sentence in Angola for a murder he didn’t commit, and Stephane Grimaud, a vampire, who has just awakened from a hundred-and-fifty-year sleep to a world he doesn’t recognize. Danni has always known she was different, but she doesn’t understand what that difference means until the Vampire Grimaud recognizes her as an Adept, and awakens her awareness. He needs her help, but so does Antoine, a decent man who will die in prison unless he can enlist the aid of someone on the outside to prove his innocence.

This is such an enjoyable book on so many levels. It posits a unique and poetic idea about what vampires are and why they exist—why, in fact, humanity needs them. The writing is gorgeous, conjuring the decayed beauty of the landscape with its oppressive heat, swamps, and Spanish moss. The scenes inside the prison are rendered with an attention to detail that is utterly convincing, and rather different from the stereotypical stuff one usually sees about prisons.

Best of all are the characters. Grimaud, the vampire, born in the time of Charlemagne, is courteous and cultured, frighteningly intelligent, but also oddly childlike, and, when need be, a ferocious predator. Antoine is a good man caught in a nightmare and struggling to retain his humanity. Danni, born with a special gift that she is just beginning to understand, is courageous and complex as she knowingly walks into the most dangerous situation of her life.

The only problem with this book is that it ends! I’m not complaining. It’s a good, satisfying ending, but I’m just not ready to part company with these characters. I’ve got my fingers crossed for a sequel.

A real vampire story
By LFelder
An Unremembered Grave weaves the stories of three, richly textured characters in scenes so real, you’ll feel you’re part of the story rather than reading a book. You’ll greedily drink in the backstory of Danni Telfer. She wants to forget an embarrassing affair in her recent past. She knows she is different, and she is just waking up to her aptitude as an Adept.

You’ll forget to breathe when Stéphane Grimaud, a real vampire (not the sparkly kind!), arrives on the scene. Buried for 150 years in the dirt of a plantation called Angola, he wakes up weak and ignorant of, but amazed by, all the trappings of present-day life in Louisiana. It’s hard not to fall for this gorgeous, seductive, sensitive, intelligent being with a penchant for colored silk waistcoats.

Then there’s Antoine Dupre, wrongly accused and convicted for murder, living out his days as prison counsel, more terrified by new hope awakening in his chest than the goons who threaten his very existence.

If you’ve read the Bo Bradley series, you already know how deftly Abigail Padgett sets characters in their locale, using just the right details. When Bo is in a Louisiana thunderstorm, you’re watching a filament of light stretch across a darkened sky, you’re hearing the thunder rumbling and cracking, and you’re breathing the moist, dense air. When someone standing beside Antoine’s desk in the prison library spins around and stomps off, you’re there with Dupre, watching dust motes swirl in displaced air. When Danni, in Las Vegas, steps from air conditioning into the street, you’re there, baking with her, in the heat mirage.

I'm in love with Grimaud, and I'm not nuts about vampires. . .
By Ann B. Elwood
Grimaud, the vampire who arises from an unremembered grave in Padgett’s new book, breaks vampire stereotypes – he’s a fully realized character who turns all other vampires pale and two-dimensional. I loved Bram Stoker’s Dracula when I was maybe twelve and then outgrew it, and modern-day wimpy love-object vampires do not appeal to me at all. But, oh, Grimaud! Yes! Padgett’s descriptions of his urbane and complicated personality, his returns from near-death (the reconstitution of his body, the pinkening of his newborn skin), his love of blood for the history that lives in it, his adaptation to modern life after sleeping (?) in a grave for a century and a half are absolute, believable poetry. Grimaud alone is reason to read this book, but add to him Danni Telfer, a historian who is an adept without knowing it and Antoine DuPre, an innocent man incarcerated in a Louisiana prison, and you have a reading experience you’ll never forget. Padgett is a well-known mystery writer, and in this book (as in all her others) she has concocted a mystery that keeps the characters in motion, changes their lives, and keeps the reader riveted. I can’t wait for the sequel.

Dr. Ginott's innovative approach to parenting has influenced an entire generation of experts in the field, and now his methods can work for you, too.
In this revised edition, Dr. Alice Ginott, clinical psychologist and wife of the late Haim Ginott, and family relationship specialist Dr. H. Wallace Goddard usher this bestselling classic into the new century while retaining the book's positive message and Haim Ginott's warm, accessible voice. Based on the theory that parenting is a skill that can be learned, this indispensable handbook will show you how to:
- Discipline without threats, bribes, sarcasm, and punishment
- Criticize without demeaning, praise without judging, and express anger without hurting
- Acknowledge rather than argue with children's feelings, perceptions, and opinions
- Respond so that children will learn to trust and develop self-confidence

The Code of Communication:Parent-Child Conversations

Children's Questions: The Hidden Meanings

Conversing with children is a unique art with rules and meanings of its own. Children are rarely naive in their communications. Their messages are often in a code that requires deciphering.

Andy, age ten, asked his father, "What is the number of abandoned children in Harlem?" Andy's father, a lawyer, was glad to see his son take an interest in social problems. He gave a long lecture on the subject and then looked up the figure. But Andy was not satisfied and kept on asking questions on the same subject: "What is the number of abandoned children in New York City? In the United States? In Europe? In the world?"

Finally it occurred to Andy's father that his son was concerned not about a social problem, but about a personal one. Andy's questions stemmed not so much from sympathy for abandoned children as from fear of being abandoned. He was looking not for a figure representing the number of deserted children, but for reassurance that he would not be deserted.

Thus his father, reflecting Andy's concern, answered, "You're worried that your parents may someday abandon you the way some parents do. Let me reassure you that we will not desert you. And should it ever bother you again, please tell me so that I can help you stop worrying."

On her first visit to kindergarten, while her mother was still with her, Nancy, age five, looked over the paintings on the wall and asked loudly, "Who made these ugly pictures?" Nancy's mother was embarrassed. She looked at her daughter disapprovingly, and hastened to tell her, "It's not nice to call the pictures ugly when they are so pretty."

The teacher, who understood the meaning of the question, smiled and said, "In here you don't have to paint pretty pictures. You can paint mean pictures if you feel like it." A big smile appeared on Nancy's face, for now she had the answer to her hidden question, "What happens to a girl who doesn't paint so well?"

Next Nancy picked up a broken fire engine and asked self-righteously, "Who broke this fire engine?" Her mother answered, "What difference does it make to you who broke it? You don't know anyone here."

Nancy was not really interested in names. She wanted to find out what happened to children who break toys. Understanding the question, the teacher gave an appropriate answer: "Toys are for playing. Sometimes they get broken. It happens."

Nancy seemed satisfied. Her interviewing skill had netted her the necessary information: This grown-up is pretty nice, she does not get angry quickly, even when a picture comes out ugly or a toy is broken, I don't have to be afraid, it is safe to stay here. Nancy waved good-bye to her mother and went over to the teacher to start her first day in kindergarten.

Carol, age twelve, was tense and tearful. Her favorite cousin was going home after staying with her during the summer. Unfortunately, her mother's response to Carol's sadness was neither empathic nor understanding.

CAROL (with tears in her eyes): Susie is going away. I'll be all alone again.

MOTHER: You'll find another friend.

CAROL: I'll be so lonely.

MOTHER: You'll get over it.

CAROL: Oh, Mother! (Sobs.)

MOTHER: You're twelve years old and still such a crybaby.

Carol gave her mother a deadly look and escaped to her room, closing the door behind her. This episode should have had a happier ending. A child's feelings must be taken seriously, even though the situation itself is not very serious. In her mother's eyes a summer separation may be too minor a crisis for tears, but her response need not have lacked sympathy. Carol's mother might have said to herself, "Carol is distressed. I can help her best by showing that I understand what pains her. How can I do that? By reflecting her feelings to her." Thus she would have said one of the following:

"It will be lonely without Susie."

"You miss her already."

"It is hard to be apart when you are so used to being together."

"The house must seem kind of empty to you without Susie around."

Such responses create intimacy between parent and child. When children feel understood, their loneliness and hurt diminish. When children are understood, their love for the parent is deepened. A parent's sympathy serves as emotional first aid for bruised feelings.

When we genuinely acknowledge a child's plight and voice her disappointment, she often gathers the strength to face reality.

Seven-year-old Alice had made plans to spend the afternoon with her friend Lea. Suddenly, she remembered that her Brownie troop met that afternoon. She started to cry.

MOTHER: Oh, you're disappointed. You were looking forward to playing with Lea this afternoon.

ALICE: Yes. Why can't the Brownies meet another day?

The tears stopped. Alice called her friend Lea and made another appointment. She then proceeded to change her clothes and get ready for her Scout meeting.

Alice's mother's understanding and sympathizing with her daughter's disappointment helped Alice deal with life's inevitable conflicts and disappointments. She identified Alice's feelings and mirrored her wishes. She did not make light of the situation. She did not say: "Why do you make such a fuss! You'll play with Lea another day. What's the big deal?"

She deliberately avoided cliches: "Well, you can't be in two places at the same time." She neither accused nor blamed: "How come you made plans to play with a friend when you know that Wednesday is Brownie day?"

The following brief dialogue illustrates how this father reduced his son's anger by simply acknowledging his feelings and complaint.

When David's father, who has the night shift and takes care of the home while his wife works during the day, returned home from shopping, he found his eight-year-old in an angry mood.

FATHER: I see an angry boy. In fact, I see a very angry boy.

DAVID: I'm angry. In fact, I'm very angry.

FATHER: Oh?

DAVID: (very quietly) I missed you. You're never home when I come home from school.

FATHER: I'm glad you told me. Now I know. You want me to be home when you come home from school.

David hugged his father and went out to play. David's father knew how to change his son's mood. He did not become defensive by explaining why he wasn't home: "I had to go shopping. What would you eat if I did not buy food?" He did not ask: "Why are you so angry?" Instead, he acknowledged his son's feelings and his complaint.

Most parents are unaware that it is futile to try to convince children that their complaints are unjustified, their perceptions erroneous. It only leads to arguments and angry feelings.

One day, twelve-year-old Helen came home from school very upset.

HELEN: I know you'll be disappointed. I only got a B on my test. I know how important it is for you that I get an A.

MOTHER: But I really don't care. How can you even say such a thing? I'm not at all disappointed in your grade. I think a B is fine.

HELEN: Then why do you always yell at me when I don't get an A?

MOTHER: When did I yell at you? You're disappointed, so you're blaming me.

Helen started to cry and ran from the room. Even though Helen's mother understood that her daughter blamed her instead of acknowledging her own disappointment, pointing this out to her and arguing with her did not make her feel any better. Helen's mother would have been more helpful had she acknowledged her daughter's perception by saying: "You wish your grades were not that important to me. You want to be the one who decides what is a good grade for you. I see."

Not only children but even strangers appreciate our sympathetic understanding of their difficulties. Mrs. Grafton related that she dislikes going to her bank. "It's usually crowded and the manager looks and acts as if he's doing me a favor just being there. Whenever I have to approach him I become tense." One Friday she had to get his signature on a check. She was getting upset and impatient as she listened to his manner with others. But then she decided to try to put herself in his place and express her understanding by reflecting and acknowledging his feelings. "Another difficult Friday! Everyone's demanding your attention. It isn't even noon. I don't know how you manage to get through the day." The man's face lit up. For the first time she saw him smile. "Oh, yes, it's always busy here. Everyone wants to be taken care of first. And what can I do for you?" He not only signed the check, but walked with her to the teller to process it more quickly.

Fruitless Dialogues: Preaching and Criticizing Create Distance and Resentment

Parents are frustrated by dialogues with children because they lead nowhere, as illustrated by the famous conversation "Where did you go?" "Out." "What did you do?" "Nothing." Parents who try to be reasonable soon discover how exhausting this can be. As one mother said, "I try to reason with my child until I am blue in the face, but he doesn't listen to me. He only hears me when I scream."

Children often resist dialogues with parents. They resent being preached to, talked at, and criticized. They feel that parents talk too much. Says eight-year-old David to his mother, "When I ask you a small question, why do you give me such a long answer?" To his friends he confides, "I don't tell my mother anything. If I start in with her, I have no time left to play."

An interested observer who overhears a conversation between a parent and a child will note with surprise how little each listens to the other. The conversation sounds like two monologues, one consisting of criticism and instructions, the other of denials and pleading. The tragedy of such communication lies not in the lack of love, but in the lack of respect; not in the lack of intelligence, but in the lack of skill.

Our everyday language is not adequate for communicating meaningfully with children. To reach children and to reduce parental frustration, we need to learn a caring way of conversing with them.

BETWEEN PARENT AND CHILD
By M. Mander
Dear Amazon:

This important little book was used as our textbook collection while I was getting my Masters in Special Ed. at South Texas State. It was and is an essential book for any parent, even those who have normal, healthy and happy children. It is even more useful for anyone dealing with children on a daily basis: parent, caregivers or teachers.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to have a handbook on dealing with children in a respectful succesful way. I was a public school teacher for 17 yrs. and went on to mentor others and homeschool my own children through High School.

This is a small, easily read book with clear options for anyone who wants a way to deal with children in an effective, non violent, respectful and endearing way. It saved me and my husband many difficulties and helped us to treat our kids with love and respect, while teaching them appropriate behavior. It taught us how to keep a united front, which is essential in dealing successfully with children. This book assists in showing parents how to do things together that show love and respect for themselves as well as their entire family.

Hope this helps readers in their choice of books.

Stellar advice, True Wisdom, Irreplaceable
By M. Gaggiotti
I can't say enough about how valuable this book is. If I could meet the author myself to get down on my knees and thank him, I would. He has given such wise advice about the importance of caring about children's feelings. He has taught me more effectively than anyone else in my life what it really means to respect other people. I try to keep his principles in mind every day when raising my three children, ages six, four and sixteen months. Demonstrating the fact that I care about their feelings has helped me tremendously in disciplining them. They are well-behaved and happy children (most of the time!) Excellent, superb. The wisdom is sound and deserves much more than a quick glance. The more time you invest in internalizing the principles, the more you will get out of it. I am forever indebted to Dr. Ginott!!

The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance, by Steven Kotler

Wall Street Journal Bestseller

In this groundbreaking book, New York Times–bestselling author Steven Kotler decodes the mystery of ultimate human performance. Drawing on over a decade of research and first-hand reporting with dozens of top action and adventure sports athletes like big wave legend Laird Hamilton, big mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones, and skateboarding pioneer Danny Way, Kotler explores the frontier science of “flow,” an optimal state of consciousness in which we perform and feel our best.

Building a bridge between the extreme and the mainstream, The Rise of Superman explains how these athletes are using flow to do the impossible and how we can use this information to radically accelerate performance in our own lives.

At its core, this is a book about profound possibility; about what is actually possible for our species; about where—if anywhere—our limits lie.

Review
**Wall Street Journal Bestseller

**New York Times Bestseller

“A thrill ride of a book, empowering in its implications of what any individual can achieve.”- Kirkus Reviews

“A fascinating primer on how athletes of extreme sports use flow to accomplish what seem like impossible goals, such as skiing down cliffs or surfing 100-foot waves. But a close reading of the book also provides great insights into how everyday athletes can use flow in their workouts and the rest of their lives.” - Financial Times

“Kotler takes on the latest research on flow through the lens of action and adventure athletics…. [writing] primarily about flow in high-stakes sports like surfing — where focus and concentration can be the difference between a tubular ride and a watery death — but the concept could also have big implications for the business world.” - Fortune

“In this high-octane study, Steven Kotler explores ‘flow’, a neurochemically rich state in which cognitive and physiological processes mesh. The stupendous physical feats of the late ski-base jumper Shane McConkey and others are riveting. Equally surprising is what we know of flow science, such as how the brain’s superior frontal gyrus deactivates to speed decision-making”- Nature

“The Rise of Superman is full of scientific explanations about why flow helps athletes perform at their peak, why this is on the upswing in recent decades, and how almost anybody can better tap their ultimate potential.”- Surfer Magazine

“Kotler focuses on extreme sports for good reason. These athletes face a constant choice, “flow or die,” and his book contains some compelling characters…Flow is rooted in the brain, and Kotler does a good job of explaining that science.”- The Washington Post

“In Kotler’s riveting and beautifully written book, he explains the neuroscience behind the mystery of the flow state, and provides the key to unlock innovation, creativity and ultimate achievement for leaders, entrepreneurs and anyone interested in the big and bold.” - Peter Diamandis, New York Times bestselling author, founder of the X Prize, co-founder of Singularity University.

”The Rise of Superman is an electrifying book about a potent state of mind. If you aren’t inspired to brainhack your way up to the next level, start again at page one.”- David Eagleman, Neuroscientist, New York Times bestselling author of Incognito.

“The Rise of Superman is a page-turning, game-changing account of the secrets of ultimate human performance—a must read for anyone interested in seriously raising the level of their game.- Ray Kurzweil , Director of Engineering at Google, author of How to Create a Mind and The Singularity is Near

”In THE RISE OF SUPERMAN, Steven Kotler breaks down the elusive and ecstatic ‘flow state’ that so many high performance athletes, musicians, and artists refer to as indispensable to their creativity and virtuosity – and in doing so, offers us a map to achieve massive upgrades in our capacities and potential.”- Jason Silva, futurist, host of National Geographic’s Brain Games

THE RISE OF SUPERMAN is a tour de force. Rare the book that is learned, clever, fascinating, and useful. This book is all four. Inspiring, impeccably researched, and supremely practical, Kotler’s book is a must-read for everyone who wants in on the secrets on how to surpass their personal best. - Ned Hallowell, New York Times best-selling author and Harvard Medical School psychiatrist

rethinking the cause of innovation
By Todd B. Kashdan
This was a tough book to review. One reason is that I have read Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's 1990 perennial bestselling book Flow - The Psychology of Optimal Experience, his 1993 book The Evolving Self: A Psychology for the Third Millennium, and his 1996 book Creativity, Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention. Flow, the psychological research behind it, the relevance to sports, business, and life, have been around for decades. Jimmy Johnson, the once coach of the Dallas Cowboys gave some credit for his superbowl wins in the 1990's to reading Csikszentmihalyi's book Flow. With this background, I opened this book on the relevance of flow to action adventure sports with trepidation.

The strengths in this book are also some of the weaknesses. You will gain a new appreciation of action sports heroes that deserve greater recognition. Discover the accomplishments of legendary surfer Laird Hamilton, skateboarding sensation Danny Way (although you will gain more from watching the documentary "waiting for lightning" which is available on Netflix), rock climbing fanatics Alex Honnold and Dean Potter, among others. I knew many of the stories but Steven Kotler is a journalist and knows how to trigger intrigue. The concept, science, and applications of entering into the deep psychological state of flow plays second to Steven's attempts to draw you into the death defying feats in sports. Let me be absolutely clear - if you are uninterested in adventure sports, you will not enjoy this book.

I'll give you a few examples of what I mean. Kotler describes amazing physical feats that only someone familiar with the sport can visualize:

In describing a skateboarding move by Danny Way, he writes, "Moments later, he kicks off the contest with a seventy-foot, 360 mute grab over the gap and a McTwist - an inverted backside 540 with another mute grab - out of the quarterpipe."

In describing another skateboarding move, he writes., "In 2011, Bobby Brown threw the world's first Triple Cork 1440 - which is four spins and three flips, and all off-axis."

Or there is Alex Honnold's climb up Half Dome where he writes, "Up a zesty finger crack, then a few easier pitches, then one of the route's trickier sections - a nasty boulder problem above a small ledge."

It is tough to describe a kayaking, surfing, skateboarding, mountaineering, or skydiving journey and many times, I had to re-read sections over and over to get a visual image. It was because of this that I ended up putting this book down several times. And when I returned to reading, I usually received ample reward. Perhaps the best chapter in the book is Chapter 2 with the focus on revolutionary accomplishments on two separate occasions by Laird Hamilton on a surfboard. Completely immersed in huge waves, Laird instinctively attempted moves that no surfer had ever talked about or seen before. These moves changed the landscape of surfing and you can envision every detail. In this particular chapter, you could understand how Laird in the state of flow transformed his skill set, himself, and then everyone who heard about the events. (years of training leading to moments of deep concentration, a loss of self-consciousness, a sense of control in a task that slightly exceeded his skills)

In other sections of the book, I wasn't fully convinced that flow could be given credit for innovation. More accurately, I felt as if flow was being oversold as the panacea for reaching our potential.

So why did I give the book four stars? Because this book is one of the best on the topic of flow. The description of the conditions that increase the likelihood of flow states ("flow triggers") are clear and distinguished from the actual experience itself. The neuroscience research and discussions of the quantified self offer a new window into what it feels like to be in flow. You won't learn much about how to apply the knowledge about brave action sport characters to your own life, but then again Steven Kotler doesn't make this promise. This is an interesting read, the author is an excellent writer (despite the caveats listed above), and I walked away thinking more deeply about the importance of entering into this state of flow when I write, work out, and spend time with other people. For this, I am grateful for the time spent.

Extreme sports = flow. What else is new?
By Alberto Vargas
If you are interested in flow, as defined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, this book is absolutely worth the five bucks (Kindle edition).

However, Csikszentmihalyi's groundbreaking book, Flow, is a better introduction to this topic, and a better one-stop shop on this topic. Dr. Cs was the scientist behind this concept, while Mr. Kotler is a journalist providing mostly human-interest stories about extreme athletes.

The overall thesis of this book is that flow puts the brain in a state where pattern recognition and learning happen at much faster rate, giving rise to superhuman achievements over relatively short periods of time. So consistent flow is a shortcut to mastery, esp. compared to the popular 10,000 hours of conscious practice.

Unfortunately, the author focuses entirely on extreme sports enthusiasts: big-wall rock climbers (free soloists), white-water kayakers, giant-wave surfers, BASE and bungee jumpers, freedivers, X-games-winning skaters, acrobatic skiers, etc. I say unfortunately because (a) I could not identify with people who dedicate their life to these pursuits and many of whom die as a result and (b) it is fairly obvious that these pursuits produce flow, while trying to achieve flow in a more productive daily-life activity is difficult and not addressed here.

The author mentions a McKinsey study that executives who experienced flow were five times more productive. I would have loved to read more about that, rather than about how a ski bum tore his rectal muscles while trying to stop himself from terminal velocity by grabbing a rope with superhuman strength.

Things I learned:
- Montessori schools tend to engender flow in students, more so than other educational methods
- Skill to difficulty ratio should be 96% to 104% for flow (assuming you can actually measure this)
- Group flow, like in a jazz band, group of rock climbers, engrossing conversation, is a phenomenon separate from but similar to individual flow

Overall: Recommended, only as a sequel to Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

A marketing tract clearly aimed at flattering corporate head-honchos
By Piaw Na
The Rise of Superman is ostensibly Steven Kotler's book about Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, as experienced through extreme athletes. In reality, it seems to be Kotler's attempt to break into the corporate consultancy/sponsorship world, using pseudo-scientific words (such as his organization's name: The Flow Genome Project) to try to get corporations to buy into his brand of "mindfulness extreme" as the next big competitive advantage.

The way you can tell Kotler's a poseur is that he uses terms like "source code" inappropriately through the book, as though trying to show that he has some deep insight that he is uniquely qualified to tell. No engineer or computer scientist worth his salt would use the words "source code" the way he does, and on closer inspection, it appears that Kotler did a "search-and-replace" for "source" with "source code" throughout the text.

I'm not dismissing Flow or Mindfulness in any way. Nearly every unimpoverished human has experienced flow at one point or another in his life. I've threaded harrowing descents down Italian mountains with inches to spare between my handlebars and a pick up truck coming up on a narrow winding road, and piloted boats out of ports with sidewinds where mistakes would mean disaster, but I don't claim to have any deep insight to flow that are inaccessible to others. More prosaically, nearly every video gamer that has played a perfect level of Tetris or say, Naughty Dog's sublime UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves - Game of The Year Edition - Playstation 3 has experienced flow, since of all the genres of media, video games are the best at eliciting and enabling flow.

Kotler, however, is after the multi-billion dollar corporate contract, so writing about how video game companies engineer flow into their games wouldn't be interesting. Instead, what he has to do is to flatter corporate head-honchos into thinking that they can be compared with such luminaries as Shane McConkey, who pioneered extreme skiing. The reality is, most corporate VPs or CEOs (Richard Branson and Gary EricksonRaising the Bar: Integrity and Passion in Life and Business: The Story of Clif Bar Inc. excepted) couldn't do an independent cycle tour in the alps without a supporting entourage, let alone do any of the death defying stunts described in this book. Even the late Galen Rowell would have been happy to tell you that a National Geographic expedition is anything but flow-inducing, with 300 porters toting huge amounts of camera equipment and film.

Now the stories in this book are interesting, and are the saving grace of the book. Since I'm not a big fan of Surfing, snow sports, or BASE jumping, this was my introduction to athletes such as Laird Hamilton, Shane McConkey or J. T. Holmes. Of course, note that McConkey died trying to do one of those death-defying stunts, as did several of the athletes described in this book. Any sane person would say, "Yeah, this shows that no amount of flow-hacking can eliminate the laws of physics and probablity", but of course, Kostler merely claims that McConkey's survival for so long doing so many insane stunts shows that Flow enables you to be a superman.

Kotler's attempts, then, to link the extreme athlete's in-the-moment flow to the businessman's startup, or investment, or management of a meeting, is laughable in the face of all this. Certainly, nobody's life is at risk when attempting a corporate takeover (though several livelihoods are, the members of the 1% who do this aren't risking anything except next year's bonus, if that), or investing in a startup, or doing the next performance review.

All in all, the book is worth reading for the stories of the extreme athletes in it. That's the only reason to read it. All the other business mumbo jumbo needs to be ignored. And for heavens sake don't give Kotler any business if you can help it. Check the book out from the library or borrow it if you're an Amazon prime member. Do not buy!
