Winner 2003 Michigan Literary Fiction Award for original novel

"Written with precision and perception, this is a highly recommended work from a writer to watch."

---Library Journal

"O'Connor . . . remains a consummate artist, true to her vision of a work that is bleak, truthful, and lacking any overt sentimental overtures. Her eye, a poet's eye, misses nothing."

---three candles

". . . a touching odyssey of a girl poised between the emotional abyss and the reader's heart."

---Minneapolis Star-Tribune

"A sensitive, often disquieting book that rings true throughout. . . . It's the skill of an accomplished writer that we see Faina's extraordinary spirit, while simultaneously experiencing her pain and despair. The end result is an uplifting, even inspiring book without any of the sugarcoating often found in stories like this."

---California Literary Review

Where No Gods Came is author Sheila O'Connor's compelling story of Faina McCoy, a young girl caught in a perilous scheme of elaborate lies created for her own harrowing system of survival. Enmeshed in a tangled family web, Faina is abruptly uprooted against her will from her father and finds herself half a continent away on the doorstep of a mother who abandoned her years before-but who can't live without Faina now. Alone, persecuted, and exploited, Faina must fend for herself as she searches for love and answers, navigating the streets of a strange city and forging bonds of feeling with liars and outlaws.

Tragic Hope
By Grant
This is the story of Faina, a young girl sent to live with her mother and sister, neither of whom she has ever known, while her father takes a job on an Alaskan rig to pay off gambling debts.
Faina starts off charmingly naiive, but is quickly immersed into the tragic world in which her sister and mother live. In different ways she becomes a magnet of salvation for both mother and sister, both of whom seek redemption and freedom from the choices of their past. It is truly a compelling read -- a simple story of a girl suddenly thrust into a highly unstable environment. There is not a hint of fakeness to the book. You almost want to reach out and wipe Faina's tears away with a Kleenex.
This is not at all the type of book that I usually read, but I would highly recommend it.

a real coming of age story
By Dark Lake
Where No Gods Came is a true coming of age story: the brave Faina McCoy navigates the dangerous waters of the adult world with all the spunk, know-how, and hope she has in her heart. O'Connor's vivid prose lets us deeply into each character as the story slowly winds/unwinds through the year. A must read book.

Please, Ms. O'Connor...write more!
By Dawn W
A treasure of a book. O'Connor masterfully depicts the coming of age of young Faina McCoy -- at once tough and fragile.
No detail is wasted. No emotion goes untested.
O'Connor's tale of a youth exposed to the fallout of the her damaged family's reckless life choices, keeps you on the edge of your seat, fervently hoping that Faina will emerge with a happy ending to her story.
O'Connor's attention to detail allows us to immediately identify and sympathize with Faina. The author deftly depicts the cruelty of throwaway comments by those around Faina, the pressures of wanting to fit it with other preteens and having to shoulder (literally) the frailties and flaws of the family that makes it impossible to fit in anywhere. And she does so with gut-felt truthfulness and gritty accuracy.
Don't miss this wonderful novel.

Confessions of a Heartbreaker, by Jennifer Sucevic

For high school senior, Parker Montgomery, life is pretty damn awesome. With his good looks and easy charm, girls have always fallen right into his lap. Which FYI- is precisely where he likes them. Sure, it can be something of a curse, but it's one he thoroughly enjoys taking advantage of. And he can always rely on his best friend, Max, to have his back. A little added side bonus to that friendship- Parker is continually reminded by Max's rollercoaster of a relationship (the guy was, after all, stabbed with a spork) just as to why he has absolutely zero interest in being tied down. Parker's idea of a long term commitment consists of a few pleasant hours spent fooling around in a dark room. And then there's football. Yep, he pretty much lives and breathes it.

Unfortunately for Parker, life is just about to nosedive before exploding into a fiery ball of flames because senior literature isn't going so well for him. And his teacher, Ms. Fisk (whom he not-so-lovingly refers to as an old bat) has called his parents to set him up with a tutor. With an ultimatum between raising his grade or sitting out for the season, Parker has no other choice but to begrudgingly meet with a tutor three times a week. Now throw in a girl who thinks he's nothing more than a walking STD and Parker suddenly finds himself doing all the chasing. If that wasn't enough to make him feel as if the world hasn't totally fallen off it's axis, this girl has relegated him to some strange realm called the friend zone. And he's pretty sure she doesn't mean friends-with-benefits either...

Is it possible that Parker Montgomery has finally found the one girl worth changing for? Will he somehow be able to prove to her that even a man-whore like himself can be reformed?

ding ding ding...and we have a winner
By Kay
(Possible spoilers ahead. This is a must read for anyone wanting to smile, laugh, fall in love repeat)
Inhale...hold...exhale. Nope. Maniacal slightly over the top gushy and oh so cheesiest dork of a smile still plastered on my face. After a serious of angsty and slightly-waaay-dark stories I needed something light and cutsie. This book is so much more than that. I loved that this was written entirely in male pov. The few that I've read haven't been written so well. What I liked most about this story was it felt as Parker was actually sitting there next to me regaling me with his story. I seriously laughed aloud entirely too often while staring at my iPhone and startled my husband-cute suspicious husband- while reading this one. I connected with both the mc and loved max as well. Even the brief inserts of Lindsey were well done. This was the perfect mix of laughs, heartbreak, and hope in my opinion. I loved watching Parker grow and develop as a person. You can definitely see him on the cusp of manhood and although it wasn't the deepest romance in my opinion, I truly felt that these characters were a realistic couple that I could see being together. And I looooved that although Parker did develop from cocky player to faithful man in love, his slightly arrogant and innuendo filled amusing personality didn't change. He's still cocky and his ego yeah it's definitely outweighing the size of Texas. The ending was perfect-not too cheesy to be unbelievable but definitely one that leaves you optimistic about their future. All in all this has definitely been one of my favorite reads yet and I can't wait to check out more of this authors work. It's not often I read a book without editing the story and changing scenes in my head for how I'd prefer it. Crazy I know, but I rarely read a story that I wouldn't tinker with. Not this one. Wouldn't change a single thing about it- I'd recommend this book to any and everyone. No matter your age this is one that sucks you in and will have you bursting with laughter and heartfelt hope as well. (And the best part: no over the top mental problems that are so popular lately and just enough angst where you don't feel the need to hit the liquor cabinet just to get through the next chapter.).

Loving "Confessions"
By Kathi Lengyel
I bought this book on a whim - looking for something to get me through the terrible January weather in Wisconsin. I read this book in two days - didn't sleep much, cook or eat...now I wish there was a sequel because I want more. Just loved it! It still makes me laugh just thinking about it.

For readers who made David Allen’s Getting Things Done a perennial bestseller, a fresh and entertaining exploration of a topic that concerns just about everyone over the course of their careers: how to be more productive at work, and in every facet of our lives.

After earning his business degree, Chris Bailey turned down several lucrative job offers to pursue a lifelong dream—to spend a year performing a deep dive experiment into the subject of productivity. Bailey had been fascinated with productivity since he was a young teenager, when he began researching every paper and every book available on the topic. After graduating college, he created a blog to chronicle his year long series of productivity experiments on himself, and well as his continuing research and interviews with some of the world’s foremost experts, from Charles Duhigg to David Allen. Among the experiments that he attempted: Bailey went several weeks with getting by on little to no sleep; he cut out caffeine and sugar; he lived in total isolation for 10 days; he stretched his work week to 90 hours; a late riser, he got up at 5:30 every morning for a month, all the while monitoring the impact of his experiments on the quality and quantity of his work.

This book—The Productivity Project—and the lessons Chris learned—are the result of that year-long journey. Among the many counterintuitive insights Chris discovered that had the biggest impact on his productivity: shrinking or eliminating the unimportant; the rule of three; striving for imperfection; scheduling less time for important tasks; the 20 second rule to distract yourself from distractions; and the concept of productive procrastination. Bailey offers over 30 best practices that will help every one of us to accomplish more.

NEWSFLASH: Busyness and Productivity are not the same thing
By N.J. Terry
Heard about this book on one of Tai Lopez's videos, and it is put together very well. You can read this book start to finish, or skim through (as I did) to find what is applicable to you. Even better, each section has a "Estimated Read Time" at the beginning so that you can gauge how long the chapter will take you, or if you only have a few minutes, you can skip to a chapter that matches your time.

For me, the biggest take aways were the Rule of 3 (in which you organize your life to have 3 things on your To-Do list), brain dumping (where you right down all the thoughts that you have at that moment and reference later), and the Collection Box (which is similar to the Brain Dump, except you jot thoughts as they come to you while you're working on a task). I use the "Collection Box" at work to focus more, and I find that it has helped bit by bit in exercising my attention muscle. I also made a note to turn off all notifications during work, so that I don't get distracted by the buzzing and pings on the lock screen.

I've only been practicing the techniques for a couple of weeks, so interested to see how this turns out over the year!

Full a great ideas and insight
By Bakari Chavanu
This is the second book I've read about productivity since I started using Todoist, the tasks management program. Bailey's book gave me a few really useful strategies and goals for improving my task management strategy. As a result reading this book, I've moved about a dozen of my maintenance tasks over to Monday mornings, which is my least productive day of the week. I am also going to experiment with not drinking coffee for 30 days and see how it affects my daily energy level.

This book would be very useful as the a college course, because just reading it without following through on some of the suggestions will not make it very useful.

I definitely suggest highlighting the book and trying out many of the recommendations he suggests at the end of each chapter. I also recommend keeping a reflective journal about your productivity, and write about what's working and not working with your task management strategy. This book provides lots of different ways to think about your strategy, as well as experiments you could try to improve your productivity.

Easy read with good info
By Lynn P
I wasn't really sure if I would like this book as I've read a lot of productivity books and he is 20 years younger than me. But I was curious to see what he learned during his year of productivity. I was surprised to find it to be an easy, informative and entertaining read. He provides easy exercises to incorporate what he learned into your life. I didn't expect to find any earth shattering new info (which I didn't) but I loved how he structured it around the ideas of utilizing time, energy, and attention, a concept I'm not sure I've seen before. I also appreciate how much research he did in his project. The book overall was a great review for me and I would definitely recommend it.

From Booklist
When the word war is mentioned, most people conjure images of blood, bullets, and violent clashes over land and oil. Hence, fighting a war over something as apparently abundant as water sounds almost surreal, and yet there are places in the world right now where nonshooting battles are already being waged over this precious resource. According to international-affairs authority Chellaney, it’s only a matter of time before tanks roll and lives are lost in countries struggling to secure enough water for their citizens. Unless, of course, the world community finds a way to ensure this universal need is met for everyone. Beginning with the sobering fact that almost a billion people don’t have access to clean water, Chellaney gives the reader multiple snapshots of existing water-related tensions around the world, then offers several risky but necessary solutions based on current UN-based international rules. A clearly written and thorough guide to a complex problem that, along with global warming, is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most serious humanitarian crises.

Review
This book argues that even though water is of fundamental importance to humans, we have undervalued it and have therefore failed to create institutional mechanisms at the international level to ensure its prudent use. This argument is developed in detail in five chapters, considering both the scientific and political implications of water use. Chellaney (Center for Policy Research, New Delhi) notes the geopolitical impacts of water shortages on the frequently bellicose behavior of Israel and its neighbors. The author then provides a credible account of the ways in which China has become an unprecedented water hegemon. The reader learns that China's unabated dam building has allowed it to control the headwaters of several international rivers and manipulate their cross-border flows. Therefore, concerted external pressure is needed to get Beijing to accept some form of institutionalized cooperation. The author concludes that in order to prevent water-based conflicts, a set of international rules, cooperative institutional mechanisms, and environmentally sustainable water management solutions will be needed. Chellaney's attempts to draw causal connections between water and actual problems can sometimes be questioned, but his book, while occasionally repetitive, provides a lucid account of the nexuses between water security and world peace. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readership levels. (CHOICE)

A clearly written and thorough guide to a complex problem that, along with global warming, is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most serious humanitarian crises. (Booklist)

Chellaney sketches a bleak picture of water scarcity in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, regions also struggling with unstable governments and rapidly growing populations. What Chellaney calls "water stressed conditions" are also appearing in developed countries, such as Australia, Spain, and South Korea. Even the deep-water aquifers that support modern agriculture in North America are dwindling. But will the social and environmental stresses of water shortage lead to conflict and armed violence? On that question, Chellaney's book is more speculative. Conflicts over water have already embroiled states along the Nile basin, in Africa, and along the Tigris-Euphrates basin, in the Middle East, and the war in Darfur has at least partly been driven by clashes over access to water in Sudan's far west. Chellaney makes it clear that such conflicts will become more common as water begins to be "used as a weapon," as a recent U.S. intelligence assessment predicted, at least in a metaphoric sense, as upstream countries deny water to downstream ones. (Foreign Affairs)

There’s nothing quite like water. There’s no life without it and there’s no substitute for it. But as Brahma Chellaney reports in his new book, Water, Peace, and War: Confronting the Global Water Crisis, by the 2020s some two thirds of the world’s population will face problems getting enough of the stuff. In the United States and other highly developed countries, the battles over water pit those who want rapid economic development against those who insist on conservation. (See the long history of California, or just see Roman Polanski’s Chinatown.) But in many developing countries, there’s nothing about water wars that’s figurative; they are ferocious fights for survival. One example: Darfur. And let’s not even start talking about the Holy Land, where the River Jordan is neither deep nor wide. Throughout the Middle East and large swathes of Africa, dams and diversions upstream can be acts of virtual—and sometimes literal—war against those farther downstream. Chellaney calls for transparency, collaboration, and sharing across borders. But given the record of so many international initiatives in recent years, it’s hard to imagine much action will be taken until the rich and powerful see their wells running dry. (Newsweek)

Chellaney’s fine work describes itself as ‘a study of the global linkages between water and peace,’ but most of the book is an examination of the connection between water and conflict. ‘Hydropolitics’ promises to become increasingly contentious and nasty. . . . While Chellaney . . . sees water-related conflict as a growing international threat, he does not believe that armed conflict over this one truly indispensable resource is inevitable. But preventing water wars, as he sees it, will require ‘rules-based cooperation, water sharing, uninterrupted data flow, and dispute-settlement mechanisms.’. . . Yes, the world has a water problem. But it has a bigger problem with authoritarianism. Despots and dictators will use this liquid gold to disrupt peace, accumulate power, and force neighbors to submit. (World Affairs)

This book is essential reading for specialists and for those wishing to familiarize themselves with the politics of water resources. Looking at the world from this perspective will help readers to gain a new insight into many troubling issues now and in the future. (Global Policy)

Chellaney synthesizes several decades of research and analysis across a range of technical and policy fields into a clear, yet detailed, summary of the emerging crisis around this most basic and vital of resources, and the potential consequences for human security and international stability. . . . The strength of Chellaney’s synthesis lies in the way he combines these well-known trends with geostrategic analysis. . . . Water, peace, and war are each hugely complex issues in their own right, and the nexus between them is even more difficult to grasp, let alone untangle. In Water, Peace, and War, for once we have an analysis that lives up to its own publicity. (Survival)

Chellaney shows in this masterful and comprehensive survey how wrong we are, and how what was perceived as an inexhaustible resource has over the past 50 years become scarce. He shows us that if we do not take care over the next decades, water rather than oil will become the resource over which there is most anguish and strife. . . . The book bursts with compelling information. . . . Chellaney usefully distinguishes between the impact of these. . .pointing out that even without climate destabilization, water availability and purity would be gravely compromised by deforestation, ground-water pollution and altered land use. . . . [He] uses his mastery of the figures to give us a crystal-clear insight into the problems we can anticipate if we do not act to conserve fresh water and regulate its distribution in a fair and equitable manner. (Medicine, Conflict and Survival)

The risk of conflict over water is growing ever more severe, and here, at last, is a book that analyzes water through the lens of international peace and security. Brahma Chellaney performs an invaluable service by identifying the multiple causes of global water stress and showing what must be done if conflict over scarce and contested supplies is to be averted. (Michael Klare, Hampshire College)

Brahma Chellaney’s Water, Peace, and War is the first work to make water the center of its concern and to argue that water is emerging as a more important issue for the fate of mankind than population growth, food supply, pollution, peak oil, other ‘peak’ commodities, and climate change. The author’s writing is fluid, and complex materials are handled with clarity. This is an excellent contribution to a tradition of important works that have argued in one way or another that the world faces some kind of ecological crisis.
(Andrew Nathan, Columbia University)

Frightened about terrorism? Proliferation? Big power rivalries? You had better start worrying about water. Brahma Chellaney tells you why, in a tour de force sweeping in its breadth, staggering in its detail, and sobering in its analysis. (Robert M. Hathaway, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars)

Now in an updated edition, this pioneering and authoritative study considers the profound impact of the growing global water crunch on international peace and security. Writing in a direct, non-technical, and engaging style, Brahma Chellaney draws on a wide range of research from scientific and policy fields to examine the different global linkages between water and peace. Offering a holistic picture and integrated solutions, his book has become the recognized authority on the most precious natural resource of this century and how we can secure humankind’s water future.

"It is hard to find something more important for human existence than water. Readers will find in this book an in-depth overview of the topic, which will raise some alarm-bells… this book is essential reading for specialists and for those wishing to familiarize themselves with the politics of water resources.” -Global Policy

A riveting guide to a key international challenge
By Vakratunda
Brahma Chellaney's last book, Water: Asia's New Battleground, won the 2012 Bernard Schwartz Award for its pioneering research. This new book also promises to be a trailblazing volume.

This riveting guide to a pressing international challenge is thematically structured, with each chapter focused on a key theme. It begins with an overview of the sharpening international competition over natural resources before concentrating on the water-related issues. The author's style is lucid, compelling, and sophisticated. Blending materials from natural and social sciences, the book offers policy and investment recommendations on how to mitigate the water crisis. It is a must-read for investors, policymakers, scholars and university students.

Slogged Through to the End
By Gary
I found this book to be replete with factual information. The author obviously has a great deal of knowledge about water and the impact it has had on civilizations. I found the book difficult to read as it jumped around from topic to topic, sometimes restating information that had been provided earlier in the book. I think the books readability could be improved greatly by a good editor.

Starred Review. Grade 1-4–Is there room for one more "Cinderella" variant in your collection? The answer is yes if it's this charming version set in the 1920s. Ella Cinders, her father, and Buttons the doorman/delivery boy run a dress shop until the terrible day when Mr. Cinders remarries and his nasty new wife moves in with her equally nasty daughters, Ruby and Pearl. "His new wife seemed to pop up from nowhere like a sharp-eyed, expensively dressed jack-in-the box." Ella's life is misery from then on, mitigated only by the care and attention of the faithful Buttons. Her Fairy Godmother sends her off to the ball where the Duke of Arc is smitten with her, but in the end Ella chooses a different happily ever after, with Buttons. Hughes's gouache-and-pen-line illustrations exhibit her usual meticulous attention to detail, with the ball scenes inspired by Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies, and the original dress designs by important French couturiers of the period. This insightful retelling also offers a fascinating visual peek at a glamorous time.–Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

From Booklist
K-Gr. 3. It's the 1920s, and Ella Cinders works with her father in his dress shop, along with their young doorman, Buttons. After Mr. Cinders remarries, his new wife puts him under her thumb. Ella is soon exhausted from working at her sewing machine, while her stepsisters are modeling the gowns Ella has designed. The story follows a traditional course until the very end. When the suave socialite duke puts the slipper on Ella's foot, she dismisses him and turns to Buttons, who has been her solace through her ordeal. Together they will go off and start a shop of their own, a more preferable life than being "dressed like an expensive doll." A stylish enough work, this is a bit of an indulgence for Hughes, and the high-fashion setting and the flapper costumes don't add much to the tale for a young audience. The new ending will get their attention, however, and this self-empowered Cinderella makes for an interesting change of pace. Ilene Cooper

A Book Right Out of the Golden Age of Movies-Sensational!
By M. Allen Greenbaum
Knowing that this Cinderella-themed book won the "Kate Greenaway Medal for Children's Illustration," I decided to look at the illustration before reading the text. I was looking for authenticity and creativity in the pictures, as well as a hint of the story to come. I'm also a fan of jazz, and although the music isn't synonymous with the "age," I was curious to see whether author/illustrator Shirley Hughes incorporated any musical elements.

It didn't take long to discover the sweep and style of the 1920's, for Hughes' 2-page opening title shows a glossy ballroom floor, inhabited by a small jazz band, self-assured men in tuxedoes and tails, fashionable women in full length gowns (plunging either in front or back), and a white-coated "manservant" offering martinis. (Zelda, we have arrived!) As the story begins, pictures show the middle and under classes, and the scornful looks of the social "betters." The latter are dressed in chiffon, feathers, fancy hats, and jewelry, and a man sports a pinstripe suit with a rose boutonnière and impeccable black and white spats. You can sense the texture of their clothes, just as you can feel the conflicting attitudes of the haves and have-nots. I cheated and looked at the endpaper: The rich colors come from gouache, accented and shaded with pen. In addition (and, as noted by another reviewer), Hughes' original dress designs were inspired by 1920's French couture; her ballroom scenes by the décor and set designs of the glorious RKO-produced Astaire/Rogers musicals. The book's remaining pictures convey emotion (especially in cinematic-like close-ups), dramatic lighting, subtle and grand action, and swirls of gorgeous, opulent color. Hughes captures the look of money and the face of disenfranchisement with equal magnificence.

OK, so I'm completely sold on the pictures. What about the story? As you may have gathered, the Cinderella here is "Ella Cinder," a comely woman who's an expert helper in her father's dress shop. When she can, she laughs with almost- boyfriend "Buttons." As for the scornful women mentioned above, they're her dad's new wife (Cinder's stepmother) and her daughters (the stepsisters!). The stepmother takes over running the shop, the stepsisters model, lounge about, and call Cinder names, and Cinder herself has to work harder than ever. Mr. Cinders is a broken man in this power play, and he can do nothing to help his daughter.

Buttons, however, scrappy American that he is, "stays on the job for [Cinder's] sake." "Privately he called the [stepsisters] a couple of puffed-up, made-up, stuck-up, brainless parakeets." He also plays his guitar" in Ella's ratty basement room, and sometimes, "they even danced together...moving softly in and out among the bales of cotton." This is pure literary magic, Hughes' words and pictures mesh like a slow dance; they're consistently evocative and note-perfect.

I'll now cut to the chase of this modernized (to a point) fairy tale: An elite ball is planned, and the stepsisters scoff at the neglected Cinder. Very soon, however, an efficient yellow-hatted woman with a purple umbrella (her wand, it turns out) does her magic, and Ella turns into the Queen of the Jazz Age, the Belle of the Ball, and the Delight of the Duke who dances with her. Hughes wisely keeps the stroke of twelve and missing slipper motifs, but like any good 1920's film, Ella turns down the rich duke for her true love, Buttons, who can promise only his winning and constant love, a dream of owning their own shop, and his famous bacon and eggs. This book from 2003 is a complete delight, excelling in every conceivable way, and it's hard to imagine any child (or adult) not enjoying and treasuring it immensely.

Note: The book is so cinematic in illustration, plot, and dialogue, that I'm already having fun casting a hypothetical "movie": Perhaps director Frank Capra (or George Cukor) would insist on a dulled-down Carole Lombard as "Cinder"; Stewart , Cagney, or a relatively new, "nice guy" actor as "Buttons," and S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall or Lionel Barrymore as the beleaguered father. Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell would reprise their cat-fighting roles from "The Women," with Katherine Hepburn (cast against type) or Bette Davis as the (wicked) stepmother, and Franchot Tone or Leslie Howard as romantically tragic Duke. Indulge yourself as I did, and buy this book for a child, and, especially, for yourself.

Entertaining & Clever Re-write of Cinderella
By Kotori
There are a lot of things to like about this book.
It is set in the 1920's and Ella is a garment maker, in her fathers elegant little dress shop. When her father remarries she gets a horrible new step-mom and two step sisters, suitably nasty.
"His new wife seemed
to pop up from nowhere like
a sharp-eyed, expensively
dressed jack-in-the-box"
Ella has a dear friend named Buttons, who makes life easier for her by keeping her company as she stays up late sewing, making her laugh and singing her songs.

The funny thing about Buttons to me is he looks like he MUST be an Aussie, and uses words like "brainless parakeets" which seems to prove the authors intention. He looks like a young mel gibson, fresh from the set of Gallipoli, and it's quite amusing. One of the wonderful things the author has done is make this book so quirky.

Ella doesn't have a perfect sylph-like figure merely hidden by soot, instead she's redheaded, with corky curls and a plump little body, which when tucked into a more suitable gown, looks just fine.

It's her personality which wins the Duke over and brings him around begging for her hand. And dear Ella takes a good look around her and realises that it's Buttons she really want's, and they take off, and set up their own dress shop.

The illustrations are fantastic, and as written in the back of the book, the ball scenes were inspired by the dance sequences in the R.K.O. Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies.
The dresses are Shirley Hughes original designs, inspired by the French couturiers of the 1920's, Doucet, Poiret and Patou.

Just love it.
Ages 8+ would most appreciate this book, although certainly any age will happily sit through it.

For you it makes an entertaing bedtime story.
For them, the same, and a little twist to the regular fairytale.

"You Never Did Try My Bacon and Eggs, did you?"
By R. M. Fisher
There are several authors and illustrators of children's picture books that should be essential reading experiences for every child, created by artists that meld whimsy, humour, poignancy, wisdom and humanity with such grace that you just know that the memory of that book will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Shirley Hughes is one of these authors/illustrators, best known for her `Alfie and Annie Rose' books, but also of several other stories that capture all the above traits. "Ella's Big Chance" is one such book, taking the traditional tale of Cinderella and changing it in several vivid, exciting ways. It is old and refreshingly new at the same time.

Mr Cinders and his daughter Ella run a dress shop, along with their delivery boy Buttons (who almost always appears as the narrator in any production of a pantomime Cinderella). They are a happy family, but all that changes when Mr Cinders marries Madame Renee, who has two daughters of her own: Ruby and Pearl. Ella's new stepfamily takes over her existence, reducing her to a servant in her own home. Her only ally is Buttons with whom she has a warm and kind friendship.

Then the news arrives that the handsome Duke of Arc is having a ball. You all know what happens next: Ella is denied an invitation, a fairy godmother transforms her rags, and Ella makes her magnificent debut. The clock strikes twelve, Ella flees and the Duke begins his search for her, using the glass slipper she left behind as his guide.

One might at this stage think that this is simply another rehash of the Cinderella tale; if you've read one, you've read them all. But Shirley Hughes' version differs in several key ways. First is the setting; Parisian France in the 1920's, where the streets are quaint and sunlit, a silver limousine takes the place of the pumpkin carriage, the dancing mirrors that of Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astaire, and the costumes are the quintessential gowns of Doucet, Poiret and Patou. It is a visual feast for the eyes, romantic and glamorous.

Second is Ella's physique. Whereas her stepsisters are slender and lovely (not *ugly* stepsisters at all), Ella herself is a little on the voluptuous side - and she looks fantastic. It's a great step up from the stick-figures that frequent children's fairytales, especially those targeted toward girls.

Lastly are several story elements; such as the fact that Ella's father does not pass away but remains a hen-pecked husband who is powerless to rescue his daughter. Then there is Hughes' delightful interpretation of the fairy godmother, as an umbrella-wielding granny with a secret plan for Ella. Most important of all is the twist regarding Buttons - I won't give it away (though you've probably already guessed what it is now that I've mentioned it). I'll say no more except that it's great.

So that's Shirley Hughes's Cinderella retelling, a fantastic reading experience that everyone (especially your daughters) will love, with several subtle but truthful messages on *real* beauty, *real* kindness and *real* happiness.
