A portrait of a millennial young man in the pre-Occupy Wall Street America of bank bailouts and apathy. Marinated in cocaine and sexual failure, awkward, painful, with occasional moments of high comedic relief, TRAIN TO POKIPSE has proven itself to be frighteningly accurate in its socio-political predictions. During this election year mad-house, it's easy to find yourself wondering how we fell this far. TRAIN TO POKIPSE, written beautifully and structured in an intricate metaphor, captures the moment in time when the wheels started falling off the American dream.
Following a nameless twenty-something protagonist as he travels through New York City’s subway on the morning of February 17, 2008—exactly one month before the crash of Lehman Brothers and the start of the 2008 bank failure—we’re exposed to unfiltered flashbacks of this millennial’s short life. As he reminiscences about his time as an underprivileged scholarship student at New York’s illustrious (and expensive) Bard College and his post-graduate days in New York’s drug-fueled and sexed out nightlife scene, we learn that his seemingly wayward morning subway ride has a destination—and a purpose. He’s bound to New York’s Grand Central Station, looking to catch the train to Poughkeepsie, New York, where rumor has it that the love of his life is currently living. His mission: to repair the great heartbreak of that first love. When it turns out that he’s missed the train to Poughkeepsie, the impossibility of the venture hits him with the impact of an oncoming train. What happens next is guaranteed to leave you shocked!
"TRAIN TO POKIPSE is a Catcher in the Rye for the new century, and Rami Shamir is an authentic literary voice for a new lost generation."
—Barney Rosset, founder of Grove Press and legendary publisher of Henry Miller, William S. Burroughs, and Samuel Beckett
"TRAIN TO POKIPSE is a timeless chronicle of the psychological origins—the collective mood and affect—that catalyzed Occupy Wall Street... This is a coming of age novel for the millennial generation, born between the early 1980s and 2000s, that reached maturity under a crushing apocalyptic mood."
—Micah White, co-creator of the Occupy Wall Street Movement and author of The End of Protest (Knopf Canada)
"From the outset, the book is astonishing in a number of ways. There's a timeless momentum to the words, as if Rami inherited the Style Guide of The American Counterculture.... It's a voice recognizable for an insistent maleness, and, more so, a basic understanding of the human condition. There is a deep poetics of the heart that countervails the graffiti-tinged, highly explicit prose."
—Dale Eisinger, Hopes and Fears Magazine
"POKIPSE is a must read.... from one generation to all generations."
—Steve Dalachinsky, Brooklyn Rail

Review
"TRAIN TO POKIPSE is a Catcher in the Rye for the new century, and Rami Shamir is an authentic literary voice for a new lost generation. POKIPSE, much like the Catcher in the Rye will be a powwow of the alienated elite, where America's outsider youth can gather to infuse the vitality of their life for decades to come."
--Barney Rosset, founder of Grove Press and legendary publisher of Henry Miller, William S.Burroughs, and Samuel Beckett
"TRAIN TO POKIPSE is a timeless chronicle of the psychological origins that catalyzed Occupy Wall Street. POKIPSE deftly captures the essence of what compelled the millennial generation of cognitariat youth, overeducated and burdened with student debt, to suddenly throw aside ironic nihilism and rise up in an earnest spiritual insurrection.... This is a coming of age novel for the millennial generation... the best novel of the Occupy generation."
--Micah White, co-creator of the Occupy Wall Street Movement and author of The End of Protest (Knopf Canada)
"From the outset, the book is astonishing in a number of ways. There's a timeless
momentum to the words, as if Rami inherited the Style Guide of The American
Counterculture.... It's a voice recognizable for an insistent maleness, and, more so, a basic understanding of the human condition. There is a deep poetics of the heart that countervails the graffititinged, highly explicit prose."
--Dale Eisinger, Hopes and Fears Magazine
" POKIPSE is a must read.... from one generation to all generations."
--Steve Dalachinsky, Brooklyn Rail
"TRAIN TO POKIPSE was the last book Barney Rosset edited... Rosset's anticensorship battles all the way up to the Supreme Court, which he won, maintain a lasting effect on our society to this day, but beyond historical significance, Rosset's presence is very much in the ether with TRAIN TO POKIPSE."
--Steven Brower, PRINT Magazine
"Sensitivity does not come easy, but when it arrives it surrounds you entirely. When you finish this book you will be surrounded by love, sensitivity, and hopefully a little bit of wisdom. Live on! I did. Thank you, Rami."
--Holly Woodlawn, Andy Warhol Superstar and author of Low Life in High Heels
"I love TRAIN TO POKIPSE."
--Gary Indiana, author of I Can Give You Anything but Love and Do Everything in the Dark
"Reading TRAIN TO POKIPSE is like reading Dickens. Underneath this contemporary coming of age story is the same social analysis, the same investigation of lives lived and being lived, and the same kind of empathetic heart that listens to the world and reflects it in crisp and unexpected prose. Here we find the cracked lyricism of the street: the voice of the outsider reporting on the dispossessed. Rami Shamir has a beautiful and distinctive voice, and he is just starting."
--Penny Arcade, playwright, performance artist, and author of Bad Reputation: Performances, Essays, Interviews
"Rami Shamir is one of the greats."
--BillyBoy*, author of Frocking Life: Searching for Elsa Schiaparelli
"Rami Shamir is rapidly becoming the conscience of the No Generation. He is a master of that frozen moment when the eaters see what they are really eating. Gayer than Ginsberg, blacker than Kerouac, itchier than Whitman, slithering darkly toward the Billyberg Omphalos, Rami Shamir loads his pen with jizz, blood and drugs."
--Phoebe Legere, composer and performer
"POKIPSE invades readers' minds, forcing them to consider the context of our larger current political state as symptomatic of our interpersonal interactions.... Read POKIPSE in 50 years and experience a clearly articulated representation of the aughts in New York. Read POKIPSE tomorrow and become deeply moved toward social and personal responsibility, toward sensitivity, to live on in this decade."
--Anjelica V. Young, Evergreen Review
"Decades from now, historians will look back and say Rami Shamir captured the zeitgeist." --Jack Doroshow, aka Mother Flawless Sabrina, star of the 1968 queer cult classic, "The Queen"
About the Author
Rami Shamir is the author of TRAIN TO POKIPSE, the novel that's been called "a Catcher in the Rye for the new century." Bookending a literary canon of twentieth century masters that includes Samuel Beckett, Henry Miller, Kathy Acker, and William S. Burroughs, Shamir--the final author of legendary publisher Barney Rosset--was recently illuminated as "the last disciple of the Grove Press Empire" in a Hopes and Fears Magazine feature. Well-known as an activist with Occupy Wall Street, his work has appeared in Adbusters, Evergreen Review, and The Brooklyn Rail. He has been written about or interviewed in the Huffington Post, PRINT Magazine, Detroit Metro Times, the Brooklyn Rail, and Blotterature. Occupy co-creator Micah White has named TRAIN TO POKIPSE "the best indie novel of the Occupy generation," citing the book's "beautiful reflections on our generation." POKIPSE's second edition includes a new introduction from White.
In April 2015, Shamir launched a two-month Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a new edition of TRAIN TO POKIPSE. Following the recent success of that campaign, POKIPSE's second edition is now available.

A book to define a generation
By Joseph Lee
What can I really say about Train to Pokipse? The first time I read it, I traveled exhausted for 4 hours through New York City's bout ought, investigating 5 independent bookstores to find a book that seemed kind of interesting. I braved freezing cold weather, awkward run ins with old friends and the disinterested and annoyed glares of bookstore employees to read a book that I still actively think about, talk about and force friends to read over a year later. Guess what? Now you can read this book immediately without going on your own personal odyssey.
This book is Genre defying to what the Coming of Age novel means to all the people coming of age in a new Millenium. It's lost, confused and angry. I've heard it compared to Catcher in the Rye, but I've never really agreed, because I've never connected to Holden Caulfield the way I connect to this narrator. So stop reading this r view an buy the book, it's dark, gritty, sexual and full of almost hope, just like everyone else branded as a millenial in a time when that seems to have become a four letter word.

There was no more morning light...
By lisa beck
I picked up Train to Pokipse three years ago with very high expectations. None other than the late Barney Rosset of Grove Press and The Evergreen Review said: "Train to Pokipse is a Catcher in the Rye for a new century, and Rami Shamir is an authentic literary voice for a new lost generation." The man who introduced us to Samuel Beckett and William S. Burroughs discovered a new writer for the ages. I went to hear Rami at a reading and was blown away by his intelligence, compassion, humor, keen observant eye, and critical insight. I was clearly in the presence of an original voice, that was reinforced on every page of the signed first edition I carried home with me. I started reading it waiting for the F train. Perfect. Rami packs the wild thrill of spastic punk rock, the deep burn of desire, and the explosion of self into pages that roll from romantic prose to concrete poetry with the urgency of a classic whodunnit. Give it a read. I dare you.

Train to Pokipse by Rami Shamir is a literary classic for the 21st-century
By Amazon Customer
Train to Pokipse by Rami Shamir is one of the most enthralling books to be born into our world of cultural lassitude since a long while. This new eBook edition is for me the fourth read of Train to Pokipse, it's as exhilarating as the first time, even more so. From the first page, Pokipse melds two worlds of absolute opposites into a lyrical and classical hybrid of beauty and sadness where words become kisses and pinches in just the right amount to make the reader walk away with a sense of humanism punctuated with the grotesque and the sublime.
A marvelous read which lingers in the non-linear time space of the mind and will imprint itself on your synapses giving you more than just a moment of pause. Haunting you and staring you down, it will become part of your vocabulary of knowledge and be forever embraced with tenderness, forgiving life entirely for it's cruelty and chaos.
