So much information.....

I read a great book on the same subject, water, a while ago. Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty! gave me a lot of useful information but somehow, although we think that there is not much to know about water other than the fact that we should drink 2 liters a day, I felt compelled to read a bit more and I was right! I have to say that I wasn't sure that one could add a lot of information to the book of Dr. Batman's book but boy, was I wrong..... This book is very well written without repetitions, which are one of the biggest problems of modern books! Especially the chapter on mineral and spring waters is very interesting; it gives the reader information about mineral and spring water in a number of countries. Then there are lists for those interested in for example waters rich in calcium, waters rich in magnesium, waters rich in silica, waters rich in iron, manganese, lithium, etc.

There are several cures according to what you want to achieve. You have for example the Hydration and Deacidification Remedy if you want to deacidify the internal cellular environment of the body, Hydration and Remineralization Remedy, etc. One thing I didn't understand was how one finds out if one suffers from extracellular thirst or intracellular thirst. Without knowing that one doesn't know whether to add salt to the drinking water or not. I read that chapter several times but I still don't understand how to decide which thirst one suffers from.

As far as cholesterol goes I think that it is now fully known that the food one eats doesn't change a thing in the amount of cholesterol in the body. There are a few very interesting books on this matter! If the liver makes a lot more cholesterol than we will ever be able to eat why do experts still go on telling us that the food we eat does influences the amount of cholesterol in the body? Very annoying!

The bottom line is that we need to be very well informed and not take all the official information we get from governments for granted, like drink 2l of water a day! I started drinking much more water and started having health problems at the same time so even with water one needs to be careful and needs to know what one is doing!

Following a career in worldwide transportation business during which he established a network of contacts in the Middle East and Africa he moved into narrow-focus analysis and writing on small, little-known air forces and conflicts (about which he has collected extensive archives). That resulted in specialisation in such Middle Eastern air forces as those of Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Syria - plus various African and Asian air forces. As well as writing and co-writing 25 other books and more than 400 articles, he has co-written an in-depth analysis of major Arab air forces at war with Israel during the period 1955-73 - resulting in the six-volume book series Arab MiGs.

A rather short but very informative analisys of the PLAAF organization in the context of the PRC's foreighn relations.

I didn't give this book the five stars lightly.

it is a short book about 80 pages of an analisys of the PLAAF, its theater commands and their respective orders of battle. it focuses on every theater and the PRC relations with the effected countries which gives context to the PLAAF intentions organization and capabilities in the theater.

this is extremely informative given the ptofound changes and reforms the PLAAF expirienced in the last decade.

Early One Morning

We first meet Chiara Ravello in Rome, during 1943. Her mother was killed in the Allied bombings, her fiancé taken away because of anti-fascist activities and she lives with her sister, Cecilia in a small apartment. Cecilia suffers from fits and Chiara feels responsible for her, but a decision taken one day in October that year will change her life forever. The ghetto is being cleared and Chiara watches as families are put onto trucks to be taken away, as her fiancé Carlo was. As Chiara stands, she meets the eyes of a mother, standing with her husband and children and, in unspoken agreement, claims the young boy of the mother as her nephew. Before she has thought the act through, the young Daniele Levi is being hustled away by Chiara and the ghetto left behind.

However, this is far from being an over sentimental story of a good deed, for things – as they rarely do in life – do not go to plan. Chiara’s sister, Cecilia, does not welcome Daniele with open arms and Daniele himself reacts badly from being ripped from his mother and taken away. Distrustful, suspicious and often openly warring, Chiara tries to take her two charges to the countryside and out of harm’s way. Meanwhile, another strand of the story takes place many years after the war, when a young Welsh girl called Maria discovers a secret about her past that brings her to Chiara’s door and forces her to face her past.

This is an intriguing novel which begins as one thing and then develops into something far more interesting. Far from being just another story about wartime Europe, this is far more about how our choices change our life. Daniele is not the grateful, compliant recipient of Chiara’s sudden decision to save him. He is, as realistically he would be, an unsettled and confused little boy. Far from being a ‘happy ever after’ scenario, Daniel brings difficulties to Chiara – she obviously feel s responsible for him and loves him, but he becomes a trouble young man and causes her problems and heartache. As Maria attempts to discover her past, Chiara finds that she needs to come to terms with her feelings for the little boy whose life she saved, but whose mother she could not replace. This is a moving read, which would have a lot to offer reading groups, with much to discuss. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

From 'the rubble' of Rome arises a story of immense tenderness and pathos.

On a wet October dawn in 1943, the Nazis are rounding up the families who live in Rome's Jewish ghetto. Chiara has gone there to help the resistance movement at a local café. In a moment of supreme impetuosity, she rescues a little seven-year old boy, Daniele, from an almost certain death sentence. This is the story of the lasting consequences of that one impulsive act.

This unusual - and unusually touching - tale is written with great skill and integrity. Virginia Baily has complete mastery of her material and employs the dual time-narrative with clarity and effectiveness. Even the most incidental characters are fully rounded and believable, and the settings so skilfully described that one can see them clearly in one's mind's eye.

There is a wonderful chapter - chapter nine - where Chiara and her cleaning woman Assunta prepare the tiny, cluttered apartment for a visitor from abroad. I enjoyed this chapter so much that my heart started to flutter: can Ms Baily maintain such a high level of superb writing or will the book finally disappoint as so many do?

I needn't have worried. This is, in my view, one of best reads of the year without doubt and I warmly recommend it. One memorable passage amongst so many:

Early One Morning is a story to be savoured

The opening chapter of Early One Morning takes place on a Rome street in October 1943. It is a haunting and poignant chapter that sets the pace for a story that spans decades and considers the consequences of a spur of the moment action.

Chiara is grieving for her parents and her fiance, all victims of the war raging in Europe. Chiara is now responsible for her sister Cecilia who is unwell and suffers from fits. They plan to leave the city and live in their grandparent's house, away from the fighting. When Chiara makes a snap decision, and finds herself the guardian of a small boy; snatched away from certain death, as his family are taken away to a concentration camp. Her life changes, as does that of her young charge Daniele.

In Wales, in 1973, sixteen-year-old Maria discovers that she is not who she thought she was. When Maria contacts her, Chiara's memories of Daniele and his effect on her life are re awoken, and she now has to consider her past.

Although Early One Morning is set during the War, it is not a war novel, nor is it a Holocaust novel. It is a gently paced and emotive journey, travelling alongside larger than life, beautifully created characters and set in a wonderfully detailed place.

Virginia Baily's voice is very assured, she writes with an air of authority and authenticity, and creates people and places that are captivating. This could have been a story of joy and selflessness, it could have been a story of reunions and sentimentality, but it isn't. Chiara can be a obstinate and prickly character. Daniele is difficult, with issues that simmer just beneath the surface, resulting in heartache and regrets. Despite this, I fell in love with Chiara, and especially resonated with her struggle to quit her smoking habit which the author describes so very very well.

Early One Morning is a story to be savoured. Filled with characters who are far from perfect people, who complement and contrast so well, it really is incredibly well written, the pages fly by so quickly, the story totally consumed me. I was left with lots of questions about identity, about upbringing and parental influence, and how our lives are shaped by those around us.

Pat Pattison is a professor at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches lyric writing and poetry. Pat has written over fifty articles for various magazines and blogs and has chapters in both The Poetics of American Song Lyrics(University Press of Mississippi) and the Handbook on Creative Writing (Edinburgh University Press).?He continues to present songwriting clinics across Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Several of his students have won GRAMMY(R) Awards, including John Mayer, Gillian Welch, and Tom Hambridge.

You'll Learn a LOT regardless of your level.

I have been a songwriter for more than 12 years and this is an excellent book! It was challenging and I learned a ton, even after all of this time. It's more of a workbook than a read along book, so I learned so much more. The thing to do is to buy this book and then use it while doing his free coursera class, because this book covers the same stuff, but it MUCH GREATER DETAIL. It offers plenty of practice.

The one downside I'd say is that there is no way to check your work, so with some of the material I did it, but I'm not 100% sure that I did it correctly. Either way, I still learned a got a lot from it.

A Book For Those Who Are Serious About Lyric Writing

Why would you need a 123 page book on how to rhyme? We all know June - spoon - moon - tune and love - above - dove, don't we?

This book requires study and practice. No one is going to skim through this book and immediately become a better songwriter. But the effort is worth it.

Pattison goes way beyond the perfect rhyme, so often used by the old school lyricists who wrote for Broadway musicals. He shows how to find and use the perfect, family, additive, subtractive, consonance and assonance rhymes of a given word. Once you develop the habit of systematically finding all of the possible perfect and less-than-perfect rhymes, you will be a better lyric writer. But it requires study and practice. Spend a month or two with this book and do the exercises. The process gets easier the more you do it.

Solid information about rhymes.

This is a very technical book, that will give you a deeper understanding of rhymes, some times the technical stuff gets a little dry but it's worth pushing through that to be able to use the tools it offers some one that is trying to get better at anything. I highly recommend this book. I'm only a third the way through this book, and taking my time to absorb, not a fast read.
