Fantastic, fun how-to guide for all music students

Bonnie Blanchard continues her stellar series (Music For Life) with this new book: "Making Music and Having a Blast: A Guide for all Music Students". It is especially written for teen-age students, but will be great for everyone from novice to expert, and for their teachers as well. It is loaded with real-life examples on how to reach your goals. Whether your instrument is cello, voice, electric bass, piccolo or anything else, you have to know how to work effectively and how to have fun along the way. This book (which includes a chapter written by Ms. Blanchard's students) will help you reach your goals faster, and it shows you how to master technique and develop confidence. It is full of details about how to practice, understand music theory, sight read, memorize, conquer stage fright, decide about a musical career, keep going when the going is tough, get along with your parents and competing students, get into top music schools, and much much more. As indicated on the cover by violinist Gil Shaham, conductor Gerard Schwartz, and educator Sean Covey, it is a unique, entertaining, inspiring, fantastic book that deserves a standing ovation.

A Great Book for Your Teen Musician

A fantastic book for any teen who is interested in pursuing his/her music interests. Musician, teacher and author, Bonnie is my daughter's flute teacher who, in addition to becoming a beloved part of my daughter's life, is known nationally for her teaching techniques and her first book for music teachers, Making Music and Enriching Lives. Bonnie's flute students inevitably stay with her through high school, assume the majority of flute seats in the Seattle Youth Symphony, and often go onto receive university music scholarships or attend music conservatories. The book is also for kids who may not want to become that serious but just want to make music a bigger part of their lives, whatever their instrument. It has chapters on how to know whether to take group or private lessons, how to choose a music teacher, tips for purchasing an instrument, putting concerts and contests into perspective, and even how to deal with "helpful" parents or survive braces! Just wanted to pass along what might be a great gift idea for a budding musician. My daughter has her nose in this book all the time!

Know your core content before using Q & A type prep.

Passed the NCLEX in 75 questions. This was one of the prep materials I used. Very portable, which is nice. Questions are good as well as the rationales. My problem with this is the same as with other Q and A based reviews....you're better off focusing on reviewing core content than completing endless Q and As. If you know your core content than you can apply that knowledge to any NCLEX question.

Overall good variety

I found it to be helpful in the variety of types of questions, however I only gave it four starts because it lacks a variety of topics covered. Only has a few questions for general body systems, while it does differentiate between children and adults I found it to be brief in the topics it covered.

A fine reference book

This is a fantastic reference book of superstitions, new and old! While it would have been nice to get an explanation of the origin of these superstitions, the book is still a great read and helps to understand why some people feel and fear the way they do.

As for the definition of BELT, which references to the marriage to a coloured man and caused a certain amount of discomfort of reviewers on here, yes, it's a term that is dated now but the cover sleeve of the hardback does say, and I quote: "The Cassell Dictionary of Superstitions provides a fascinating overview of an astonishing diverse range of popularity held fears and beliefs. Many are still familiar and widespread. Others now belong firmly to the past, but are intriguing nonetheless for the insights they offer into human preoccupations and taboos." The operative words being "others now belong firmly to the past" and mean they are not NEW superstitions. I believe the wording was kept in the original format to preserve the history of these superstitions.

By the way, the word OMEN, which also appears in the definition of BELT, does not always mean negative, it is a phenomenon supposed to portend (predition of) good or evil. You get to pick depending on the intention!

A fairly average book on superstition

I own four books that claim to be "dictionaries" of superstitions, and three that claim to be "encyclopedias" of superstitions -- along with numerous other books on the topic. Among all of these, I'd have to put this one somewhere in the middle. One thing it has going for it, the alphabetic articles are pretty well written, albeit not quite as entertaining and interesting as "Encyclopedia of Superstitions" revised version by Christina Hole or "Encyclopedia of Signs, Omens and Superstitions" by Zolar. It does take an international perspective and cover topics fully, and frankly has some beliefs I have not read elsewhere. However, the problem here, as with many other superstition "encyclopedias" and "dictionaries" is the lack of any references. This to me at least is a problem; I like to know where a belief came from. However, this is still a decent book on this topic, but if you intend on just owning one "dictionary" or "encyclopedia" of superstitions I would recommend Christina Hole's revision of "Encyclopedia of Superstitions."

Poor reference material

This book is not really a dictionary, but more of a micro-encyclopedia. It does have an impressive list of items and the superstitions associated with those items. The problem is that the details given are very poorly researched and there are no sources sited. Each of the articles under each item are not well constructed or organized, particularly for the larger entries. There appears to be a lot of hearsay in the book. Without sources sited, the reader may become suspicious as to whether the author is pulling their leg, or was having his leg pulled by someone else. There has got to be better sources for this information.

Extraterrestrial Compendium ebook

The book itself is really interesting....but the ebook version is loaded up into a "cloud" (electronically loaded on a server somewhere)....meaning you cannot download it to your computer and must wait for the "cloud" to download all the ebook data (pages) to your computer every time you want to read it.

Not a real problem to wait for the fast cloud download, except for the fact that the server where this ebook (and many others) is stored gets terribly confused whenever you go forward or backward to review ANY page. It simply mixes up both the images AND written data without fail. Sometimes you will have a full page of data, other times you only get a paragraph, and most always the images are COMPLETELY mixed up with the data.

I ended up having to screen shoot EACH page (a real PITA)....and multiple shoot some of the most offending page mix-ups to later properly re-assemble in Photoshop (another PITA). Unless you're really proficient with a computer (and have some extra time), don't bother with the ebook version....just get the paperback...it's an interesting book fersur!!!

This is an interesting book if a reader likes to take a fantasy trip into the cosmos! The graphics are great! I found the descriptions a bit redundant in some cases. All-in-all a nice mind exercise if you like cosmological possibilities. A fun read and the pictures fit well with the descriptions.

Who knows? Someday we may just meet some of these extraterrestrials. If they actually are as described then the fun begins!

I'm a big sci-fi fan and this year watched so many movies that are alien related. I never knew there is an organization that documented the origins for the spotted aliens. Illustration just made it more visual and belieavable. Great reference book for all sci-fi fans.
